Noel Hayes R.I.P: Noel passed away last week, having braved his final illness with grace and fortitude, just as we would expect from such a fine gentleman. Not so active in Dungarvan G.C. in recent years, Noel always kept abreast of club affairs, lending words of advice when necessary. His main activity at the club over the past decade was conversation and snooker, with the occasional game of cards thrown in. Dialogue with Noel was always thought-provoking and interesting, as he dipped liberally into his fund of stories, experiences and wisdom, much of it gained while at our old home in Ballinacourty. Noel’s many friends from the F.C.A., Waterford Foods, the Bridge Clubs, golf - and many other spheres - turned out in force for the obsequies at the weekend, and Dungarvan Golf Club was well represented. We offer our sincere sympathy to his friends and extended family.

AGM: This time around it was the ‘Parent Club’ AGM, and we had a room full of people interested in Management affairs, i.e. the provision and maintenance of course, clubhouse and all services to members. The meeting was preceded by our Annual Mass for Deceased Members, which this year remembered especially Greg Fives, Michael O’ Brien and Noel Hayes. Rev. Fr. Richard Doherty celebrated the Mass in his inimitable style, with words at will in praise of our members past and present.
There were many lively discussions at the AGM, with Tadhg Sheehan giving an excellent and detailed account of our financial affairs. The sole motion passed brings us into modernity in writing to our meetings. We are no longer required to give notice by ‘snail-mail’, relying instead on the technology of mobile phones, e-mail and the club website. It is vital, of course, that members who have not given their e-mail address to the club should do so without delay. This will ensure that you will be kept updated on events. Our new President, Frank Lloyd, was introduced to the meeting, and the Chairman, Brendan O’ Kennedy was loud in his praise for the many members and staff who continued to make our club what it is.

West Waterford: Our Captains, Ann Stack and Noel Brennan, report a very pleasant Sunday afternoon at West Waterford. The invitation to participate in the 4-person scramble was much appreciated. There was a great buzz around West Waterford course and clubhouse, with invitee officers from several other clubs in the area enjoying golf, music and the generous hospitality of the host club. Nice one!

SENIOR ALLIANCE: Considering the amount of rain which has fallen in the past week, the Alliance was fortunate that the powers that be at Callan G.C. allowed the fixture on Sunday last to go ahead. The course however and particularly the greens stood the test, and justified the decision, thus setting the stage for a plethora of good scores, some of which did not feature in the prizes.
Former Close champion and Alliance President,Gavin McNeill, fully recovered from the bout of flu which cused his absence from the West Waterford outing, shot a fine 69,the best gross of the day. However, the 70 gross/66nett of Liam O'Mahony was the leading nett score, winning by two from Alliance Captain Tony Brady. Brendan McDermott's level par 71 got him 2nd gross, while Mark Cooke took 3rd nett on the break of a tie from Billy Walsh. John Gough had a marvellous 1 under gross to win the back nine.Next outing is at Castlecomer on Sunday 30th November.
