Christmas Golf: Don’t forget the Lions Club Christmas Appeal this weekend. Members who cannot play in the 16-hole competition and fine weather golfers, who would like to contribute to this worthy cause may put their contribution into the scorecard box or leave it at the bar or in the Pro shop. The prizes, generously sponsored by Ben O’ Neill, will be presented at 6.00 p.m. on Sunday, soon after play finishes.
On Christmas day we have the usual 9-hole competition for those who can play with three clubs – including a putter. John Gough will sponsor again, with a generous prize for the winner. Yes, the ideal way to work up an appetite for the turkey and ham.
There will be social golf on St Stephen’s Day, with open competitions over the following five days, including a Mullinahone Fourball. A what? On each hole you and partner multiply your Stableford scores, so you must try to avoid a blank. Prizes for all of these open competitions will be presented on New Year’s Day after the Captain’s Drive-in and Scramble, at 5 p.m. approx. The entry sheets for the 9-hole New Year’s Day Scramble are in the locker rooms, and we expect the usual big crowd.

Enright Eurospar Winter League: Sponsor Ger Enright of Eurospar tells me that he is delighted with the interest in the winter league and that we beat the frost this weekend to get the fourth round completed. There was a big turn-out, despite cold conditions, with all teams conscious that it was ‘five to count’ time. The scoring was remarkably good, with John Considine scoring 42 points on Saturday – despite carrying a penalty after a previous win. Well done John, and for helping to keep the Ballinroad team in top spot over Master McGrath! The league will resume in mid-January, with two more weeks of ‘five to count’.

Sponsors: We have been in contact with our sponsors over recent weeks and the reaction is very favourable. Despite the downturn in the economy we have enlisted the generous support of some new sponsors. This year we hope to spread the purchase of prizes more evenly among our sponsors, and we hope that our members will support them when possible. We also hope to purchase prize vouchers directly from sponsors, and put the complete list of sponsors on the Dungarvan Golf Club website.

High Handicap Golfers: Martin Landers, our new Competition Secretary, tells me of his plans to have an Open High Handicappers on a weekly basis. Seán Power will have a sub-committee to get this competition up and running, and all the details will come your way later. Martin also tells me of his plans for an ongoing 9-Hole singles, from Sunday to Saturday each week, with entry and re-entry. This is especially for golfers whose competition needs are better met by the shorter course; we hope that these two competitions will be well supported by our members.
