Weekly 9-Hole: The Men’s Club weekly 9-hole got off to a great start, with Martin Lynch’s 24 points just edging out Roger O’ Connor. The competition runs from Sunday to Saturday, with entry and re-entry costing a mere €3. All the details are in the locker room. Tom Phelan speculates that the Sixty.com members will be glad to support this new event, not least as they can play both competitions on Wednesday afternoons. Enright Eurospar Winter League: Sponsor Ger Enright was out to meet the troops on Sunday, but the weather didn’t do him or us any favours. Once again the weekend was abandoned for league purposes, but scores are carried forward to next week. Thursday saw many out scoring for their team – including Liam Hansbury’s ‘cricket-score’ of 43 points, but Saturday was not a day to be out. Some few of the early starters finished in rain and howling gale, with John Considine at the top of the pile with 34 points. By the time John was in the course was already holding water; remarkably, by Sunday morning the water had drained away but Jack Frost took over. Eternal optimists, we expect that the league will continue, uninterrupted, over the coming weeks. With five scores to count this week, the last three rounds will be ‘six to count’. All to play for, they tell me. South-East League: Vice-Captain Des Cleary accompanied Noel Brennan toYoughal GC on Thursday for the annual fixtures meeting of the South-east League. Dungarvan were drawn in Section A with East Cork, Gold Coast, Youghal and Cobh, and the league starts at 10.30 a.m.on Sat. 14th Feb in Youghal when we take on the Gold Coast. As hosts we have no match the following week, on Sun. 22nd Feb, with East Cork v Gold Coast and Youghal v Cobh. At the Gold Coast on Sun. 1st Mar we play Cobh; at East Cork on Sun 8th Mar we play Youghal, and finally, in Cobh on Sat 14th Mar we play East Cork. On each occasion there will be three ‘Bruen’ pairs and three ‘Purcell’pairs in matchplay. Managers Roger O’ Connor and Austin O’ Connor have already begun to contact players for these important fixtures, and they see the South-East League as an ideal opportunity for those interested to experience the excitement of matchplay as we prepare for the early summer Jimmy Bruen and Pierce Purcell tournaments. John Gough is our manager for the Senior Cup and Barton Shield; he tells me that he will be contacting players for the Senior/Junior League, in the hope of emulating Seán Wade’s feat of 2008, when his team succeeded in capturing the pennant for Dungarvan. Men’s Club Committee: The committee meet on a monthly basis to discuss all aspects of the Men’s Club. They see their role as serving members’ needs, and they are always glad to hear from you with queries, suggestions, observations and constructive criticisms. The advice from the committee is to mention issues verbally if you wish, but to guarantee full consideration of any item of importance, remember that you should send a note or e-mail to any of the following: Noel Brennan, Des Cleary, Maurice Cliffe, Martin Landers, Vincent Hayes, Tom Mulcahy, John Considine, Denis Cronin. Another option is to leave a note or e-mail with Secretary/Manager Irene Lynch. DUNGARVAN GENTS RESULTS JAN 09: Thurs 15th Open 16h S/F 1. Laim Hansbury (15) 43, 2. JUNIOR GOLF NOTES: As we enter a new golfing season, we can reflect on a highly sucessful year for junior golf at Dungarvan Golf Club. On new years day Junior Captain Conor O'Dywer drove into office in front of large group of members and friends. The Captains Scramble followed before retreating to the clubhouse for the Presentation. First up was the Ned O'Connor sponsored handicap matchplay which was won by Gabriel Leacy. Next was the Baumann Scratch matchplay kindly sponsored for many years by popular member Des Baumann. And keeping it in the family was Jack Leacy, older brother of Gabriel who prevailed in the final. Next was the Order of Merit title kindly sponsored by Donal Williams. And reflecting his great golf during the season Gabriel again took the honors. The last event of the year was the John Casey Shield kindly sponsored by Jane Casey Florist. And showing that he is more than a chip of the old block Kevin Walsh took first prize with a fine score of 5 up. The bookies have closed the book on when Kevin will be lower in handicap than his dad, David. Our final presentation was to Mossie Walsh for his contribution to Junior Golf. Mossie has decided to go back to the big ball and as a result felt he couldn’t devote adequate time to the little ball. However on a positive note JP Hayes has agreed to step in. Captain Conor thanked everyone at the club for their encouragement of junior golf and wished all present a happy new year.
