What Could Be Worse?
We had no golf at the weekend: thankfully, that doesn’t happen very often. Course Manager Anthony Morrissey, ever mindful of protecting the course, decided on Friday to let some of the week’s rain soak away. “With the Men’s Enright Eurospar Winter League and the Ladies Olivere’s Beauty Salon League still going on we could remain open, but, to protect the course from damage we’ll close Saturday and open on Sunday” he said, not realizing that the rain had other ideas! With many members using the heavy, motorised caddycars, and the difficulties in cutting the greens, along with pools on fairways and in bunkers, the members generally appreciated Anthony’s approach.

Many of our members found other ways to put their time to other uses, not least in watching Rory McIlroy on TV in the clubhouse, as he won his first event as a professional – in Dubai. What excitement Rory gave us at the finish, as we watched in the comfort of the clubhouse, with Tom Daly serving his lovely breakfast throughout the morning. Well done to both Rory McIlroy for entertaining us and Tom for feeding us. How does Tom do it, when one considers the numbers he was expecting for Sunday lunch at the clubhouse. Tom’s fare is a big treat for families who want a break from cooking. With St Valentine’s Day coming up you don’t need any other excuse!

WEEKLY 9 HOLE: Roger O’ Connor, playing off a handicap of ten beat off the opposition with a very creditable 24 points. Roger received a very generous and well-deserved round of applause in the clubhouse on Sunday for his efforts in having a level par nine holes, with birdies on the first and ninth. Roger is a great supporter of club competitions, and is enjoying his stint as manager of the Bruen panel for the South-east League which starts shortly. Incidentally, Maurice Cliffe in second place with 21 points was not too disappointed, and is hoping that his current form will get him a run in the aforementioned South-east League, which starts in Youghal on St Valentine’s Day.
Let’s see some more entries in the 9-Hole! You can play as many times as you like, with each competition starting on Sunday and running till Saturday. And the entry is only €3.

Winter League Finals: Due to the inclement weather and occasional closure of the course we have decided to fix new provisional dates for the finals of the Enright Eurospar Winter League and the Olivere’s Beauty Salon Ladies League. We hope to have the finals on Sunday 22nd March. This leaves Sun 8th March free for the South-east Senior Alliance Captain’s Prize. As this year’s Captain, Tony Brady is looking forward to the big day, and we wish him the best with the day.

SOUTH EASTERN (SENIOR) ALLIANCE AT KILKENNY GOLF CLUB:
The early starters on Sunday 25th Jan at Kilkenny saw the best of the day, as by midday the rain, which had been forecast had arrived to spoil the party. The sizeable attendance however was made of stern stuff, most completing the 18, and making for one of the closest finishes in alliance history. Liam O’Mahony of Waterford was the winner on the day. His 70 nett just pipping the New Ross duo of Darren Cuddihy & Hugh Behan and alliance stalwart Milo Kavanagh of Kilkenny on a countback . The gross prizes were equally well contested, Gavin McNeill beating Brendan McDermott on another countback, both having 70’s  Gerry O’Keefe continued his good form by winning the back 9 with a splendid 33 nett. The golfer of the year is now coming to a point where the real contenders are beginning to emerge. More information will be available in the coming week when this weeks results are added in.
