What’s Seldom is…..
He said it himself; when popular Men’s Club Treasurer Vincent Hayes won Saturday’s 16-hole competition with the great score of 40 points, nobody was more surprised than himself! He spared us the details – with typical Cork modesty – but his round of birdies on 3 and 8, along with ten pars, beat all-comers, not least Johnny Norris who was carrying a penalty from a previous win during ‘winter golf’. John Reynolds won the prize for best gross, scoring 33 off scratch.

Keeping it in the committee, Secretary Maurice Cliffe won Thursday’s 16-hole, also with a big score, 38 points, including a great two on the 16th to win him a few bob in the Twos Club. Maurice Conway, Captain of East Cork, carrying a winter penalty was in runner-up spot, with Dermot Walsh winning the gross. Bringing scores into more achievable territory, Maurice Terry won on Sunday with 36 pts. Thankfully, with lovely weather on both Saturday and Sunday, the end of the first stage of the Enright’s Europsar Winter Area League is in sight. Generous sponsor Ger Enright spoke of a March  22nd date for the Final, but that’s not on. For the next three weeks there are six to count from each team, followed by a weekend of Quarter-finals. Then there will be matchplay Semis, with the final of both League and Plate as soon after as possibly. Let’s hope for more good weather!

South East League
Like the child’s school report, we ‘could have done better’ in our first outing in the 2009 South-East League. Our three Purcell and three Bruen pairs travelled to Youghal on Saturday to take on the Gold Coast team, followed by Cobh playing East Cork.  Team Managers Austin and Roger felt they had picked a strong side to represent us, but we had to give best to the opposition. They scored a deserved 7 to our ‘poor-finishing’ 5.

The following pairs enjoyed the weather, the golf and the welcoming hospitality of Youghal G.C.: Derek Power and Maurice Cliffe, John Considine and Tony Power, Michael O’ Mahoney and Robert Hyde, Ronan Slevin and Owen O’ Mahoney, Conor O’ Brien and Michael Browne, and Pat Phelan and Jim Harty. We say ‘hard luck’, and we thank them for representing Dungarvan G. C.  We are the hosts to Gold Coast, Cobh, Youghal and East Cork on Sunday next for the second round.

Table Quiz
Let’s see you on Saturday for the last of this year’s Table Quiz nights. We hope to get going by 8.30 p.m. and you are promised an enjoyable evening, with both spot prizes and quiz prizes. There will be the usual audio and visual rounds – yes, something to suit all tastes. Tom Mulcahy and Noel Brennan will do the business as usual, with help from the ladies.

Ladies Coastal Alliance
This was held in Dungarvan G.C. on Thur 12/02/09 with a good turnout despite a heavy drizzle for the early birds, the weather improved dramatically to bring in a great score of 36pts for 16 holes.  Dungarvan featured very well in the prizes, Winner-Mary Fleming, Cat A Pat Flanagan, Cat C- Mary McGrath, Front 9-Mary Phelan, well done girls !!
