Open High Handicap
Starting on Monday next March 2nd, there will be an Open 18-hole for golfers with a handicap of 18 or more. At the moment we are playing ‘preferred lies’ (winter rules), but, as the season progresses we intend that this competition will be a ‘Qualifying Competition’. The entry fee will be €7 for members and €15 for visitors. As always, the timesheet is online at www.dungarvangolfclub.com.

Don’t forget the Weekly 9-hole (front nine), with entry and re-entry costing a mere €3. We have had a different winner each week since we started, and last weeks’ was won by Dermot Walsh, who nineteen points off three handicap pipped the many eighteens.

Official launch of Tournament Events Brochure and website www.dungarvangolf.com
The three championship golf courses in Dungarvan: West Waterford, Dungarvan and Gold Coast will be officially launching their Triangle and Tournament events brochure and website www.dungarvangolf.com on Friday March 6th 2009 at 5p.m.  We are honoured to have Mr. Martin Cullen, Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism perform the launch.  The brochure and website is a one stop shop for the Dungarvan Golf Triangle and the 3 associated tournaments including the Dungarvan Masters. For further information on any of the events contact Irene Lynch, Secretary/Manager on 058 43310 ext. 20.

South-east League
On Sunday we played host to the four other clubs in Group B. Everybody seemed to enjoy the matches in the dry and calm weather, and we are looking forward to Sunday next at the Gold Coast when we take on Cobh in Round 3. Gold Coast beat East Cork 9-3 on Sunday, while Cobh and Youghal shared the spoils with 6 points each.

Social Scene: 45 and all that!
The Progressive 45, on Thursdays at 9 p.m. sharp is a great night at Dungarvan Golf Club. We usually have six or more tables in the lovely intimate setting of the club bar: and, there’s room for more! Yes, beginners, improvers and the advanced (legendary card players in their own minds) are welcome to play a relaxed game. Post-mortems happen, but they are ignored and promptly forgotten. Tom Phelan and Ann Morrissey, aided by ‘Mister’ Johnny Hogan run the show, and the prizes are generous. Yes, we have room for a few more pairs, so invite a friend any Thursday, if you have one! Joint winners last week were Bertha and Roger O’ Connor, Pat Harty and Tom Curran, Tom Melody and Michael Kelleher, Teresa and Vincent Hayes, Breda Hallahan and Tom Phelan. ‘Last five’ was won by Nuala Harty and Ann Morrissey, and ‘Lucky Table by Chrissie Terry and Johnny Hogan.

Another of the great sporting and social occasions in the golf week is the Wednesday afternoon 60.com event. And if you don’t want to admit you real age, you may join ‘The Young Ones’ (who claim to be in their 50s!). On Wednesday of last week, probably due in part to the dry and mild weather, there were forty on the course, and most went to the bar afterwards for a chat, snooker or cards. All the usual banter: you know yourself! And it was nice to see Redmond Russell back on his feet, and out to meet his many friends at the golf club. Winner in the 60.com was Tom Phelan (19) 20 pts; Best Lady was Ann Morrissey (18) 15 pts; second, Josephine Melody (16) 14 pts. Best Gent was Michael Fitzgerald (20) with 19 Pts; second, Jackie Fahey (22) 19 pts.

And then there was the Table Quiz on Saturday night, when Tom Mulcahy, in his own inimitable style, teased, slagged and cajoled the teams with questions and other verbals. We had a very enjoyable evening and the winners were: Émer and Brendan O’ Kennedy, ably abetted by Liam Fitzgerald and Charlie Daly; runners-up were Tom Coffey’s team, with Ina, Conor and John Considine, and in 3rd place were Noreen and John Byrne, and Joan and Denis Begley.

Get the Basics Right!
This writer took particular note in recent times of golfer care of greens. It is very heartening to know that most of our members and visitors are committed to keeping our greens up to a high standard by remembering to repair pitch marks. On Thursday, during our very popular open competition – we had eighty playing last week – I played late in the day and had very, very little ‘housekeeping’ to do as I went. It is obvious that golfers ahead of my group had done the necessary.

Remember too, you must put your handicap on your scorecard: you must sign it and have it signed: fourteen clubs is the maximum allowed when in competition. It amazes me to find that golfers are remiss on all three counts. And, what about marking the ball before you lift it? And not touching it once you have put it back in play? Lastly, please replace your divots.
