CLUB DELIGHTED TO WELCOME MINISTER: Martin Cullen T.D., Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism will visit our club on Friday, March 6th, to launch the latest version of the Dungarvan Golf Triangle. This venture, which allows a golfer to play the three courses in the area for the price of two, e.g. €80, is very popular. It is used by many visitors, and sometimes given as a gift token. The venture has its own website, at www.golftriangle.com, and there are many important links there, and information on accommodation, restaurants, tourist attractions and much, much more.

FIXTURES LISTS: This year we have moved with the times, deciding not to produce a Fixtures Booklet, Instead, the fixtures are on display in the locker rooms and on the club website. Secretary/Manager Irene has also produced a pocket-sized and handy card with all our Open Fixtures, which is available throughout the clubhouse.

Ballinacourty Cup Postponed: The Ballinacourty Cup, our first ‘Golfer of the Year’ competition for men, has been postponed to April 5th, with the Cunnigar Cup reverting to its old place as the trophy for the club matchplay singles.

Déise Golf Opens: This week the Déise Open is at the Gold Coast, with an opportunity to play any or every day to qualify for the Grand Final later in the season. Next week it will be at Faithlegg (9th -15th), and then at Dungarvan GC we host the Open during the week of Mon 16th to Sun 22nd, inclusive; we expect to have many members and visitors taking part. The following week the Open series moves to Carrick for its last week. And, don’t forget our two new competitions for the men, a Weekly 9-hole (front nine) from Sunday to Saturday, and our very latest Open High Handicappers (18 and over), each Monday.

The Course: Course Manager Anthony and his crew come in for much affirmation and praise from members and visitors. On Sunday week we had players, managers and supporters from Youghal, Cobh, Gold Coast and East Cork. They had lots to say about the condition of our course, its neatness, attention to detail, condition of the greens, how it is maturing and much more. I am glad to note that Anthony is very keen to hear from members, and he always attends to major and minor matters as they arise. He drew my attention to a minor item which can prove to be costly if neglected: when players forget to pick up coins on the green (used as ball markers), they damage the greens mower extensively. Anthony suggests that we all use plastic markers, simply to avoid the damage. Anthony also tells me that the necessary job of hollow-tining the greens will be carried out this year, weather permitting, during the week beginning Mon 23rd March. It will take a week or more for the greens to recover, but they will be the same for all golfers.

Seán O’ Hare: When Cork Institute of Technology won its first Sigerson Cup final for inter-varsity football on Saturday last, the only member of the CIT team not from Cork or Kerry was Seán O Hare, our very popular Student Member and former Junior Captain. Cork beat NUI Galway in the semi-final, while their opponents Dublin IT, also in their first Sigerson final, beat another of the ‘traditional’ universities, UCD. Playing at centre field with Paul Flynn, the pair controlled matters throughout the final, and their team won by 1-15 to DIT’s 1-10. Congratulations to Seán and the O’ Hare family.

SOUTH EAST LEAGUE: Our South-east League team played Cobh on Sunday at Gold Coast, sharing the spoils on 6 points each. We travel to East Cork next weekend, followed by our last round in Cobh on Sat 14th March. Under managers Rogie O’ Connor and Austin O’ Connor, our team on Sunday was Mark Reynolds and Gary Burke, Denis Cronin and Frank O’ Donoghue, Vincent Hayes and Brian Morrissey, John Considine and Tony Power, Brian Morrissey and Kevin Regan, Paul Breen and Gerry Byrne.
