NEW DATES FOR CAPTAINS&  PRESIDENTS PRIZES!  The Captain’s prize has been moved! And so has the Lady Captain’s, and the President’s. These three major competitions are very popular with members, and they have been moved to suit both members and golfing visitors to the area. The Ann Stack’s Lady Captain’s Prize will be on the weekend of June 6th and 7th. Noel Brennan’s will be on two weeks later, on Fri/Sat/Sun 19th, 20th and 21st, with David Crowley’s Fourball Weekend sandwiched in between on June 13th/14th. On Whit weekend, therefore, there will be Open Competitions from Friday May 29th to Monday, June 1st.  The President’s Prize (Frank Lloyd) has been moved to mid-August, on Fri/Sat/Sun, 14th/15th/16th.

ENRIGHTS EUROSPAR WINTER LEAGUE.  At last! After a few hiccups due to weather, we are now into the knockout stage of the Enright Eurospar League. After nine weeks of keen competition, with the Ballinroad team lording it over all-comers from the outset, this weekend sees the Quarter-finals of both the League and Plate, head-to-head on Stableford points. Our generous sponsor, Ger Enright is delighted with the interest shown this year, with fifteen teams of eight using every opportunity to score points.
As it is a Public Holiday weekend, with Open Competitions from Thursday to Tuesday, team members have extra opportunities to score. The committee has decided to accept scores from any of the competitions for Quarter-final purposes. As soon as possible we will have the matchplay semi-finals – possibly the following weekend, and all details will be in the club notes and on the website.
The line-up for the League is as follows: Ballinroad v Silversprings, Master McGrath v Parklane, Knocknagranagh v Fr. Twomey’s, and Pinewood/Southways v The Old Burgery. The line-up for the Plate is: Fews a bye, Kilmurray v Landsend, Kilmeaden v The Square, and Ballygambon Lower v The Réal Burgery.

SENIOR AND JUNIOR ALLIANCES.  Congratulations to Tony Brady on a very successful Captain’s Prize day of the South-East Senior Alliance, held at Dungarvan GC on Sunday. More than forty golfers from ten clubs braved the elements, and John O’ Donoghue, renowned for his goalkeeping skills with Tipperary in the past, won with a magnificent 68 nett. In-coming President of the Alliance, John Gough, did the scores and he’ll tell you all about the player he disqualified on a Rules of Golf issue.
Congratulations are due also to Nicky Norris, our popular ex-Chairman and competition sponsor, who was elected Captain of the South-East Junior Alliance for 2009/2010. Nicky has been active in the group for several years, and rarely misses an outing, along with his brother John, Martin Lynch, and convenor Jack Elstead – one of the ‘father figures’ of the alliance. Dungarvan will host the SEJA in October ’09 and March ‘10, and our course always attracts a big group from clubs throughout the south-east. Congrats are also due to Jim Harty whose 40 pts won the third prize at the SEJA Callan outing earlier in the month.

IRISH FINALS AT DUNGARVAN. The Golfing Union of Ireland has chosen Dungarvan GC to host the national finals of the Fred Daly competition – for Juniors – which will be held at Dungarvan in mid-August 2010. After the one-day event, the following three days will have the Irish Boys Amateur Close Championship, and we all look forward to hosting such prestigious events. This year, in mid-May, we host the regional stage of the Pierce Purcell, a fitting tribute to our course layout and maintenance. In this regard, our Course Manager Anthony tells me that he and his men have given much thought to pin positions on the greens. He tells me that his aim is to cut the holes so that we will have six at the front, six in the middle, and six at the back. “Another way of looking at it is to have six easy, six medium and six difficult”, said Anthony, who is always eager to find ways to keep the members and visitors challenged.

South-East League We had no luck in East Cork on Sunday, scoring only four points from a possible twelve against Youghal. Those who played for our club on the day were Pat Phelan and Jim Harty, John Regan and Frank O’ Donoghue, Eugene Slater and Jimmy Wemyss, Larry Fahey and Maurice Terry, Derek Power and Maurice Cliffe, and John Corbett and Michael O’ Mahony. Team managers Rogie and Austin were disappointed, but are off to Cobh with a few new faces on Saturday, for the final round of matches.

MINISTERS VISIT, Sport and Tourism, Martin Cullen, visited our club on Friday, to launch the Dungarvan Masters, a new competition to be played over Dungarvan, Gold Coast and West Waterford. Minister Cullen was very complimentary of the ongoing efforts of the three clubs to keep Dungarvan on the golfing map. In the company of County Mayor, Tom Higgins, Town Mayor, Teresa Wright, John Deasy TD, Gary Breen of South-east Tourism, sponsors Saltan Properties and French Associates, and representatives of the local golf clubs, the Minister spoke of the excellent website of the Dungarvan Golf Triangle, and the many and varied strategies used to market the Crystal County through golf.
Roger O’ Connor welcomed the Minister and guests, and expressed his pride and satisfaction to be involved in such collaboration among the three clubs over many years. Before he left, Minister Cullen oversaw the open draw for the Junior County Golf Championship, which was described as unique, and probably the first anywhere in Ireland. Five clubs from the east, and five from the west, will play each other on a league basis, with the two group winners contesting the final.

FIXTURES AND MORE: As members know, the fixtures for 2009 are on the club website, and on display in the clubhouse. Secretary/Manager Irene says that the 2010 fixtures are already in draft form, and members with suggestions should come forward during the season with their ideas. Irene also informed me that the Men’s Club have now displayed a Local Rule permitting the use of Distance Measuring Devices. It is worthwhile to read the notices, not least to know that any device which measures windspeed, temperature or gradient (in addition to distances) is not allowed.
