ENRIGHT EUROSPAR WINTER LEAGUE. The excitement of the first stage of the Enrights Eurospar Winter League culminated last week with the Quarter-finals, when firm favourites Ballinroad, leaders ‘from trap to line’ fell at the first real hurdle. Mossie Walsh’s team, who had scored liberally during the first nine rounds, were given their collective P45 by Pat Stack’s Silversprings. Derek Power’s Pinewood/Southways thought they had a Semi-final place in the bag, but didn’t count on the doggedness of Dermot Walsh’s The Old Burgery. Tom Phelan’s Master McGrath beat Parklane, with Martin Lynch’s Fr. Twomey’s beating Des Cleary’s Knocknagranagh: interestingly, all four ‘quarters’ were decided on a 5-3 result. After this weekend’s semi-finals, the Enright Eurospar League finalists are Silversprings and Fr Twomey’s, while Fews and Landsend contest The Plate final, both fixtures to be played on Sun. 5th April, in the afternoon. The teams are listed according to handicap, with the lowest players on each team facing one another, and so on through the teams. If a final finishes 4-4, the lowest handicap pair will go down the 19th in sudden death, as will all other matches which are level after 18. Ger Enright, our very generous sponsor, is delighted with the way the league panned out, and is fulsome with his praise for all those who participated throughout the winter, along with the committee who organised and ran such a successful winter series. START OF SEASON: With Course Manager Anthony Morrissey and his crew concentrating on hollow tining the greens this week, with the hope of early recovery after the necessary sanding, we eagerly anticipate the start of the ‘real’ golfing season over the coming few weeks. Springing to mind immediately are the Ballinacourty Cup and April Monthly Medal, along with open competitions during the Easter Holiday period. If Easter is like Christmas, we expect that many visitors will play our course over the week. This year, recognising that both Captains are teachers, there will be a 9-hole scramble for teachers and friends on Thur 16th in the afternoon, just after the finish of the Dungarvan Senior Pairs. DUNGARVAN SENIORS PAIRS CLASSIC The Dungarvan Seniors Pairs Classic tournament played over the three championship courses Dungarvan, West Waterford and Gold Coast is fast approaching. This event takes place from Tuesday 14th to Thursday 16th of April. It’s open to all golfers aged over 55 and teams can be ladies, men’s or mixed. There will be three different formats of golf in use over the three days. There are still some spaces available.
