ENRIGHTS EUROSPAR WINTER LEAGUE
At last we have a winner! The Fr. Twomey’s team have won our winter league yet again. Generous sponsor Ger Enright wondered would he ever get to present the prizes, such was the extent of delays due to frost since Christmas. However, the matchplay final came down to the wire, with the Silversprings team drawing 4-4 with the eventual winners. While Colm O’ Hare, Eoin Stack, Tadhg Sheehan and Charlie Daly lost to Martin Lynch, Nicky Norris, John Norris and Frankie Ryan respectively, Noel Hackett, Pat Stack, Jim Moroney and Kevin Stack beat Anthony Lynch, Matt Noonan, Tom Ward and Donal Williams. What next? As the low handicap players, Kevin and Donie had to go down the 19th in ‘sudden death’; while Donie had been beaten earlier, when the pressure came he was the winner, on the first tie hole.

In the Plate final Fews beat Landsend, also requiring a play-off after 4-4 tie. Frank Lloyd, Gerry Whelan, Ian Gourlay and Ronan Slevin lost to Brian Morrissey, Richard Mahony, Gary Burke and Martin Lavan respectively, while Donal Keating, Milo Guiry, Evan Walsh and Roger O’ Connor beat Shane O’ Meara, Graham Nagle, Jamie Nagle and Peter Mullanney. After last year’s open draw league the 2008/09 league is best described as a resounding success, with thanks in huge measure due to the 120 who participated and our ever-generous sponsor Ger Enright.

ROSE LANIGAN GOLF CLASSIC
The third Rose Lanigan Classic will be held at Dungarvan Golf Club on Sat 18th April. Popular nurse Rose (nee Doherty), originally from Thurles, died suddenly in 2006, but she has not been forgotten by many who enjoyed her lovely, warm and winning personality. Golfers from many parts of Munster, especially Thurles and Dungarvan, have supported the two previous classics in 2007 and 2008, enabling the organisers to contribute handsomely to several various charities, including Special Olympics, Alzheimer’s Assoc., Transport for Cancer Treatment, Déise Care Centre and many more. They have also provided defibrillators to GAA clubs, and a Gold Medal in Nursing at the annual graduation ceremony at the Royal College of Surgeons.

The Rose Lanigan Classic will be for teams of four, with no mixed teams, and a handicap limit of 26 for ladies and 20 for men. Two scores will count on each hole, and the cost, including a meal, will be €200 per team. Online booking is available, or ring Roger O’ Connor at 087 6347774, David Walsh at 086 8159443 or Pat Lanigan at 087 4158683.

SHOOTING THE LIGHTS OUT!
Congratulations are due to John Reynolds (Scratch) on equalling the course record when winning Sunday’s Ballinacourty Cup with a 67. The record can be challenged only from the medal tees, which we use just a handful of times each year, and John’s 67 included birdies on 1, 6, 11 and 13, along with an eagle on the 18th, a score spoiled only by a bogey on the 7th. Peter Mullanney, playing off a three handicap, had an outstanding card in the Thursday Open. Starting with four birdies, and following with two more in the first nine and three on the back, Peter had no bogey, for a 9-under 48 Stableford Points, which won the competition by a ‘country mile’. Well done to Peter, who is not long back after a break from golf. We all look forward to even greater scores, especially as this outstanding effort was on recently hollow-tined and heavily sanded greens.

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING?
Moloney Hardware, through David Moloney, have offered generous sponsorship for our new and re-designed bag-tags, which will be distributed to all members soon. Our PGA Professional David Hayes tells me that there was a very successful induction evening for our juveniles on Monday, hot on the heels of our great 7-0 win against Cahir Park in the Fred Daly tournament. Manager Seán Power went to the meeting to organise the 2009 Belvedere Trophy, the inter-club matchplay competition for high-handicap players in Co. Waterford. We have been drawn against Williamstown, while the other three clubs in the west of the county are in the other half of the draw. Reps from all clubs were invited by the Munster Branch of the GUI to information seminars on the handicap system; we went to Clonmel for an interesting evening. The GUI’s Membership Survey makes thought-provoking – and there will be more about this over the coming weeks; less patient readers may have a look in www.gui.ie.

SLOW PLAY
Like the poor, it will always be with us! While golf is played at a reasonable pace, with players taking time to rake bunkers, replace divots and repair pitch-marks, some few lack consideration for others on the course. Members were reminded recently by Management, and asked to be familiar with the Pace of Play Guidelines which are included in our ‘Conditions of Competition’ notices. In a nutshell, keep moving; if a gap develops in front of you, please call the following group through if it is obvious that you are delaying them.
