SNOWCREAM MILK CLUB CLASSIC
It is that time of year again when Glanbia are the generous sponsors of the re-named ‘Snowcream Club Classic’, an Open Weekend which is a very important fundraiser for our club. This year the classic runs over three days, from Fri 1st of May to Sun 3rd. There will be several prizes to play for, and Kieran O’ Connor, on behalf of Glanbia, tells me that he is looking forward to this great annual event.
The online time-sheet is now open, so get your team on the list. Entry will be €100 per team, with re-entry at €80. The Open Classic is for teams of four ladies, men or mixed. The format is: two to score on holes 1-12, three on holes 13-15, and all four over the last three holes.
TEACHERS AND GUESTS
It is uncommon at Dungarvan GC to have two teachers as captains, so Ann and Noel have organised an Open 9-Hole Scramble on Thur 16th, with a shotgun start at 5 p.m. Get your name on the online timesheet, and the draw for teams will be made on the day. The prizes have been generously sponsored by the teachers’ unions and the education business sector.
ROSE LANIGAN CLASSIC
Roger O’ Connor tells me that the organising committee for the third Rose Lanigan Classic, to be held at Dungarvan GC on Sat 18th April, are very pleased with the response from both old and new teams who wish to support worthy causes in memory of Rose (nee Doherty) who died so suddenly in 2006. Golfers from many parts of Munster, especially Thurles – Rose’s native place which she loved so much - and her adopted town of Dungarvan, have supported the two previous classics in 2007 and 2008, enabling the organisers to contribute handsomely to several various charities, including Special Olympics, Alzheimer’s Assoc., Transport for Cancer Treatment, Déise Care Centre and many more. They have also provided defibrillators to GAA clubs, and a Gold Medal in Nursing at the annual graduation ceremony at the Royal College of Surgeons.
The Rose Lanigan Classic will be for teams of four, with no mixed teams, and a handicap limit of 26 for ladies and 20 for men. Two scores will count on each hole, and the cost, including a meal, will be €200 per team. Online booking is available, or ring Roger O’ Connor at 087 6347774, David Walsh at 086 8159443 or Pat Lanigan at 087 4158683.
The Ladies Club would like to wish Padjo and the organisers the very best for Saturday 18th and remind them if you are not playing in the Classic there is an on-going 9 hole competition for Sat/Sun after the time sheet – an ideal opportunity to avail of the long evenings, and get in a bit of practice for “Lady Captains week-end”

Members received their super value annual Dungarvan Golf Club lotto tickets in the post last week, and yes, they are great value. With an ever-increasing Jackpot possible each week, and five smaller prizes, the club lotto is very popular and is an important source of revenue. Please oblige by returning your annual ticket(s) early.
GUI/ILGU on Handicaps
Carmel Fox, Des Cleary and Noel Brennan felt that the ‘roadshow on handicapping’, in Clonmel GC recently, was very worthwhile and informative. Representatives from several clubs listened to an excellent presentation on the Council of Golf Unions (CONGU) 2008 Unified Handicapping System (UHS), and engaged in an interactive workshop on golfers and their handicaps. The objective of the Munster meetings is to strive towards a consistent approach throughout the province – and indeed the whole country.
It is acknowledged that handicapping is not an exact science, but there is an onus on players and handicap secretaries to take it seriously. Obligations on the return of all scores were highlighted, including ‘society’ golf and team events/classics. How to deal with members who build their handicap and possibilities re handicap increases and decreases between Annual Reviews were discussed in depth. At Dungarvan, I expect that Handicap Committees will be meeting soon, in the hope of clarifying for members what exactly they must do. Look out for notices in the clubhouse.
EASTER WEEKEND
After all the rain on Thursday and the ‘Course Closed’ sign in evidence, we had large crowds of members and visitors on the course from Good Friday to Easter Monday when the rain returned, but several hardy boys (and a few girls) braved the elements. Wet ground required a Temporary Local Rule on placing on the fairway and dropping a plugged ball in the rough, but that did not deter players from scoring well. The men’s club had an impressive display of prizes, including golf gear, crystal and pottery, and winners over the four days were presented on Monday, including the Bank of Ireland Monthly medals for March and April, the Déise Open prizes and the Ballinacourty Cup.
Barry Morrissey won on Friday with steady golf – one birdie and several pars; Jack Leacy(4) won the gross with 35 points, from thirteen pars and two birdies. Veteran Tom Coffey won the v Par contest on Saturday with +4, with Donal Williams (4) winning the Gross. Sunday’s stoke competition was won by visitor Brian Tyrrell(16) from Carlow. Kevin Stack (Scr) won the Gross again; with an inward 33 he compensated for the three he had dropped on his outward 39 - obviously well rested after his few days at the West of Ireland. To finish the weekend on a high, Junior Captain Conor O’ Dwyer(11) shot a creditable 65; after a birdie start his round included thirteen pars and very few mistakes.
SENIOR AND JUNIOR SCRATCH CUPS
These two popular events, sponsored generously for many years by Waterford Crystal, will be played on Saturday 25th April. The online timesheets are now open, and we expect that many of our own sub-11 players will be complemented by the usual large number of visitors vying for the coveted trophies and valuably prizes.
