Scratch Cups  This Saturday we welcome ‘senior’ golfers from the area for our Open Senior and Junior Scratch Cups on Sat 25th. These open competitions are for golfers with a handicap up to and including 11, and we expect a full timesheet of players keen to play for the usual valuable prizes. The many visitors over ‘Paddy’s Weekend’, Easter and the Rose Lanigan Classic commented on the condition of our course, our great bar and catering facilities, and the welcome always on the mat, with several expressing an interest in returning as soon as possible.

Belvedere and Brennan Trophys. The Belvedere Trophy is the interclub matchplay trophy for high-handicap golfers (18 and over) who have reached the age of 25. Team Manager Sean Power is currently seeking interested members to play our first round against Williamstown – home and away – late in May. There is a notice in the locker-room, so get your name down. The format is Scotch Foursomes: what’s that? Both players drive, pick the better one and play alternate shots to complete each hole. We were drawn against Kilkenny (away) in the first round of the Brennan Cup. Team Manager Tom Mulcahy says that, after our good run in this competition last year, he wants to go all the way in 2009. “If we beat Kilkenny in the first round we are off to seek revenge against Glenmalure who defeated us late in last year’s competition”, said a determined Mul.

Readers? Committees and admin personnel regularly update notices and website material; yet there are many who ignore the written material and then complain of not being kept fully informed. Please read the information attached to online timesheets, watch out for Local Rules, Conditions of Competition notices, handicap updates and all the rest. We have a plethora of noticeboards at our club, indoors and out, and they are there for a purpose.

Teachers Scramble Captains Ann and Noel were very pleased with the 9-Hole ‘shotgun start’ scramble for teachers and guests on Thursday night. Generously sponsored by Fallons, Folens, ASTI and INTO, the event was won by Antoinette O’ Faherty’s team with Brid Killigrew, Carmel Fox and Pat Stack. There were visiting teachers from Gold Coast and West Waterford, and the runners-up were Joanne Fitzgerald, Una O’ Connell, Pat Flanagan and Jack Elstead. In third spot were Marianne Mulcahy’s team with Breda Kirwan, Martin Landers and Flor O’ Callaghan.

OPEN SENIORS PAIRS The spring weather held for our annual event in the form of the Open Seniors Pairs Classic held last week in the 3 local clubs. Participants were delighted with the three days golf and all who took part were complimentary about the event.  Many thanks to the staff and volunteers for the registration and score keeping in Dungarvan , The Gold Coast and West Waterford golf Clubs.

Rose Lanigan Classic  There was a great buzz around on Friday and Saturday, and the sun smiled on the many who came to support this great classic in memory of Rose who left us in 2006. With generous sponsorship and several prizes to play for the competition was keen, and organiser-in-chief Roger O’ Connor and his committee deserved the successful event which materialised. Rose’s husband Pajo and children were there, along with other members of the extended family and friends; the Classic was a real celebration, raising a large amount of money for charity in the process. Well done to all concerned!

JUNIOR NOTES  The Easter period saw a busy time for our junior members. Last Friday saw our first major of the year in the form of the Knocknagranagh Shield. This event was again sponsored by club stalwart Mr Maurice McHugh. It is an unique event in that it is a scratch tournament and Colm Kindregan showed his prowess in successfully defending his title with a super 73. Colm O'Hare and Conor O'Dwyer took the honours in Category 1 with Kevin Walsh and Jack Mullaney winning in Category 2. As all junior events are now "open Competitions" we welcomed visitors from Youghal,Waterford Castle and West Waterford. Maurice said many kind words regarding Junior Golf and we thank him for his generous sponsorship.

FRED DALY
Saturday saw our junior team heading to Clonmel for Round 2 of The Fred Daly Matchplay. However despite playing well we lost 4-3 with the deciding match losing on 19 to a birdie. Well done to our boys who represented our club with dignity and skill. Special praise is due to our caddies, again showing our great camaraderie amongst our juniors.
COACHING FOR JUNIORS: Coaching for our juniors will commence on Sat 25th at 3pm. Due to the numbers involved panels will be selected and individuals will be contacted. Details from Club Professional, David Hayes 058 44707.

SNOWCREAM MILK DUNGARVAN GOLF CLUB CLASSIC
As mentioned recently, our first big club fundraiser is on over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Glanbia – or Snowcream Milk - will again sponsor the generous prizes for this Open Competition with a popular format, i.e. two to count on the first twelve holes, three on holes 13-15, with all four to count on the final three. There are times available on each of Fri 1st, Sat 2nd and Sun 3rd, with entry set at €100 per team (re-entry €80). Remember, ladies, gents or mixed teams are eligible.

DRIVE SLOWLY.
This paragraph arises from a request to members entering and leaving the club to slow down on the entrance road. Course Manager Anthony says that “we are bound to have an accident, considering the speed I witness daily on the driveway”. Apart from cars, SUVs, delivery vans and lorries – and the Captain’s bicycle – there are tractors and course vehicles using the avenue all day every day. Please slow down.
