What a Classic!
Our Snowcream Milk Open Classic is imminent, and the array of crystal on display drew gasps from members and visitors alike over the weekend. We had a busload of ladies from Ballykisteen on Sunday and they were loud in their praise of the glass pieces on offer for the Bank Holiday Weekend. The 4-person team event will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, costing a mere €100 per team, and €20 per person for re-entry. The format always goes down well, with two to count over the first twelve, three on holes 13-15, and all four on holes 16, 17 and 18. Go online for the timesheet, and there are plenty of spaces, especially on Friday.

Lotto – Annual Tickets
The Jackpot at the moment for our weekly Lotto is €4,200, and remember the Stacks who won €12,700 before Christmas! Now is your chance to get your annual tickets, costing €75 for the first one and €55 for the second or further tickets. That’s a big saving, and your numbers are in then for 52 weeks. So, get in there for the first draw of the year on May 3rd, and support your club as you do so.

Notices
Don’t forget to read the ‘Conditions of Competition’ notice, which is amended occasionally. In this notice the committee lay down the conditions under which we play competitive golf. As you are at it read the Local Rules – also amended as necessary, and then move on to the notice on Prizes – the clubs policy on allocation of prizes in singles competitions. Did you notice the new notice board near the first tee? Some members asked on Sunday if they had to ‘play the ball as it lies’; they didn’t seem to realize that it was all covered in the noticeboard. Have you ever read our Local Rules? Everybody should!

Scratch Cups
We were washed out on Saturday, with both the Junior and Senior Scratch Cups cancelled at short notice: what a pity, especially as we had a timesheet full for the whole day. Many have asked about a new date, and we are looking at possibilities later in the season. We’ll keep readers posted in these columns on the club website.

GUI Membership Survey
The GUI’s survey was completed by 85 clubs (about 20% of all clubs). 84% of clubs have a joining fee, and nearly 60% of clubs allow members pay annual sub/joining fee by instalments. The average age at which clubs allow young members in is 9.9. The average age of club-members around the country is 49, with 17% aged 65+. 86% of clubs offer an average discount of 39% on annual subscription to older members, but this is changing, with many clubs intending to review such discounts in the near future.

While 65% of clubs have vacancies, 31% operate a waiting-list of up to six years. On average there are 91 boys per club, and 22 girls. Some general observations were made: the age profile in clubs is rising; the numbers of Juniors has grown dramatically; ‘society golf’ has grown while many clubs find that their membership is reduced; Distance Membership’ is an issue which needs to be addressed; clubs in an area should agree a common policy on entrance fees and membership categories.
