SNOWCREAM MILK CLUB CLASSIC
We had a great May Holiday weekend, starting with the Ulster Bank Open on Thursday, and ending with a large crowd on Sunday night for the presentation of prizes. Kieran O’ Connor’s arrival on Friday, with an impressive entourage of Snowcream guests, heralded another successful Club Classic over three days. With Waterford’s Hurling Manager, scratch golfer and Clareman Davy Fitzgerald, in tow, Kieran introduced many of his customers and Waterford senior hurlers to our testing course which Course Manager Anthony Morrissey had set out with pin positions ranging from easy to difficult.
Big ‘Dan the Man’ Shanahan was there, along with hurlers Gary Hurney, Dave Bennett and Shane Ahearne; Snowcream Area Rep Billy Harty was there too, and our own Past-President Roger O’ Connor, always comfortable sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge of our national games in the company of GAA players.
Snowcream Classic winning captain Pat Power spoke fondly of the great team event which has gone through four incarnations over thirty years. He remembered the ‘Yoplait’, the ‘Waterford Foods’ and the ‘Glanbia’ Classics, which always eluded his team of Michael Kelleher, Mossie MacNamara and Eugene Slater. So, Pat was thrilled to accept the beautiful Waterford Crystal prizes on their behalf. To conclude, Kieran O’ Connor, on behalf of sponsors Snowcream, acknowledged the influence of our late great club member, GAA person and leading farmer Greg Fives, whose idea it was to invite the dairy industry to sponsor our great annual club classic.
ENRIGHTS EUROSPAR WINTER LEAGUE
Sponsor Ger Enright, disappointed with his native Tipperary’s defeat in the National Hurling League Final, but cock-a-hoop at the success on Sunday of his team from Kilgobinet, spoke fondly of his involvement at Dungarvan Golf Club, both as a member and sponsor, as he presented the Winter League prizes on Monday. Ger was delighted with the interest shown in the league, and the fact that so many teams competed so keenly throughout the winter, aiming to win the coveted title and the generously sponsored valuable hampers.
Fr. Twomey’s did it again, and captain Martin Lynch detailed the dedication of his team, turning out to play in the foulest of weather conditions. As Ger Enright presented the beautiful hampers to Donal Williams, Nicky and Johnny Norris, Anthony and Martin Lynch, Mattie Noonan, Tom Ward and Frank Ryan, there was an air of envy and congratulations in the room, such is the success of this great team – both in the early stage and the matchplay semi-final and final. Ger Enright spoke of the recession and the pressure on sponsors; however, we all hope that his generosity will continue for years to come, with Enright Eurospar continuing to sponsor our winter league.
