VICE CAPTAINS PRIZE
What a day we had on Sunday, thanks to our highly popular Vice-Captain Des Cleary, who put on a great day for members and his many guests. With the help and support of his ever-smiling wife Bernadette, Des displayed a stunning array of valuable prizes. With the help of Course Manager Anthony, Des set a testing course, and some of his pin positions drew comment in the bar – what’s new!
Corkman Des, who has lived in this area for several years, is part of the fabric of the club, and has represented us in the South-east League, Jimmy Bruen and Pierce Purcell Shields. He is currently a busy Handicap Secretary, enjoys a game of cards in his spare time, plays in the South-east Junior Alliance, has a vast knowledge and interest in American Football- especially the fortunes of Dallas Cowboys; and yet Des has enough time to keep his golf game sharp, having won the Captain’s Prize in both 2004 and 2008. Well done Des! And we all look forward to 2010, wishing you a great year as Captain.
Roger O’ Connor won the Vice-Captain’s Prize with a 68 off the blue tees. Roger, playing off a handicap of 12, had very steady golf, with 13 pars and three bogeys. On Saturday the Bank of Ireland Monthly Medal was won by Brian Murphy off 16, who had eight pars and nine bogeys. Donie Williams played ‘the best gross golf’ on the day; he started and finished with birdies, and had thirteen pars in between. The full results from the week are elsewhere on this page.

Slow Play  “Like the poor, they will be always with us” said Captain Noel Brennan when the subject of slow play reared its head again recently. He went on to say that the Men’s Club Committee feels that there is no expectation that golfers race around the course, neglecting to replace divots, rake bunkers or repair pitch-marks on the greens. “Please be mindful of the Pace of Play Guidelines which are included in our ‘Conditions of Competition’ notices” was Noel’s message. In summary, you are expected to play without delay, keep up with the group on front, and be prepared to call a group through when a gap develops in front of you – especially when it is obvious that you are holding them up.

Match Play It is that time of year! Entries are currently sought for the club’s four matchplay competitions, i.e. Cunnigar Cup Singles, O’ Connell Cup Fourball, Scotch Foursomes and Scratch Singles. Men’s Club Secretary Maurice Cliffe has put all the details in the locker room. Put your name, entry fee and contact details into an envelope and place in the Score Card box before the end of the month.

WATERFORD  GAA CLASSIC
This week, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday the four-person team event, organised by the Waterford GAA Supporters, will be held at Dungarvan Golf Club. The timesheet is online, and the competition promises to be as great as ever, with many business sponsors and individual supporters willing to back the Waterford Senior Hurlers as they embark on another championship. Mindful of the pleasure they have given us over many years, we are glad of the opportunity to swell the funds, so a big number of teams is expected.

On Sunday we have the Intermediate and Minor Scratch Cups, and all the details are on the online timesheets which are filling fast. As usual there will be Gross and Net prizes, with lots to play for. Our course is in great nick, so good scores are expected, albeit from the blue tees – just to test your mettle!
