Handicap System
To meet your obligations, contained in the CONGU booklet on the Unified Handicap System (UHS), you must ensure that all competition cards taken out in Qualifying Competitions, whether or not complete, are returned to the organising committee. When competing away from home you may be asked for a current CONGU handicap certificate authenticated by your home club. You must also report to your home club, as soon as is practicable, all scores from Away competitions, including ‘No Returns’; for this purpose there is a page to be completed, on display in the men’s locker-room.

Players are also obliged to report to their home club scores from team events (Classics included) and scores from ‘Society Golf’ which equal or beat the Standard Scratch Score (SSS) of the course. To assist the committee in its administration of competitions and handicapping, players should also total their score and apply the correct handicap, enter the total Stableford score on the card and put their score into the computer; when the computer is ‘down’ competitors should note that on their card.

Matchplay Competitions
The entries are trickling in for the Cunnigar Cup Singles Matchplay, the O’ Connell Cup Fourball, The Club Scotch Foursomes and the Scratch Matchplay. The closing date is May 31st, and the draw will be made soon after that, so get your entry in. Simply put your name and contact details, along with the entry fee, into the envelope provided in the locker room.

Waterford GAA Classic
The Supporters Club ran a very successful classic over the weekend, despite the wind and rain. The sponsorship was as generous as ever, and the format of the competition was very popular, with two scores to count on the first fifteen and three per hole thereafter. Colm Bannon and the committee spared nothing in preparation and organisation, and displayed a beautiful array of crystal prizes, with the lovely Dawn Meats backdrop advertising the business of the main sponsors. County Board Vice-Chairman Tom Cunningham, along with newly-elected County Secretary Timmy O’ Keeffe spoke highly, at the presentation of prizes, of the great work done by the Supporters Club.

Many of the GAA clubs in the county entered teams, keen to support the efforts of our Senior Hurling panel as they embark on the 2009 Munster Championship trail. We all look forward to more of the enjoyment our hurlers have given us over the years, and we wish Davy Fitzgerald and the lads the best for the summer, including our popular member Jamie Nagle. Winners of the classic were the team from Ballysaggart GAA Club, closely followed by Clonea, Cappoquin, Colligan and Fergal Hartley’s team.

Volunteers
Arising from a conversation among some members, and with the blessing of our Course Manager Anthony Morrissey, we are assembling a panel of volunteers who will supplement the great work of the course staff by tackling small jobs on a regular basis. Marking Ground Under Repair, filling divot marks with a sand/seed mixture, moving the tee markers, trimming grass around sprinklers, and other similar tasks, would give club members an opportunity to be involved in the maintenance of their course, and take pressure off the staff who work so hard. Look out for notices and don’t be shy to put your name down. We promise that you will not be overworked.

Heard Around
Jack Leacy proudly represented Dungarvan Golf Club and Waterford at the Pro-am in Baltray before the Irish Open. Seán Power’s team beat Williamstown in our first outing of the Belvedere Trophy, but they must now play the return leg away on Wednesday. Tom Mulcahy’s team are off to play Kilkenny in the Brennan Cup. We host the GUI Pierce Purcell Shield at the weekend, and we wish Manager Austin O’ Connor and his team the best; we hope that all the preparation will be worthwhile. We were sorry to hear that John Gough’s Barton Shield team failed in their efforts at the weekend. At the well-attended presentation of prizes on Sunday, Captain Noel Brennan wished Carol Elstead and her family the best as she ‘teams up with’ Alan Thomas – a frequent visitor to our club.

Scratch Cups
The rain poured on Sunday morning, and the wind blew. However, one hundred and fifty players teed off in the Intermediate and Minor Scratch Cups, and the day improved. At the presentation on Sunday night there was a great buzz of excitement as the winners were announced, with some prizewinners travelling from Faithlegg to collect their Tara Crystal trophies. Nicky Norris won the Intermediate Scratch Cup with a marvellous 78, while Pat Kiely won the Minor with 85. The full results are elsewhere on this page.

“3” IRISH OPEN
Amid all the excitement of Shane Lowrys tremendous victory, we had a local interest in this tournament with Jack Leacy playing in the “3” Pro-Am last Wednesday.  “3” Managing Director Robert Finnegan invited county coach David Hayes to select Junior County team to compete in the Pro-Am preceding the Irish Open.  David selected Kevin O’Leary and Gary Walsh from Waterford Castle and Jack from Dungarvan.  Adding to the excitement, the lads drew Graham MDonnell as their professional partner.  The three lads played very well on a tough day finishing on a score of 9 under par, two shots outside the prizes.  But they thoroughly enjoyed their day playing beside a Ryder Cup Star.

Junior Coaching is set to resume this week with our elite panel on Friday evening preceding the Friday night scramble.  Our “C” panel starts on Saturday at 3p.m..  All members of this panel will be texted.  Junior members are requested to supply contact details to the Club as to avoid disappointment regarding lessons due to large numbers of Junior members.  If we don’t have your number, we can’t text you!
