Captain’s Prize
One of the major weekends of the golfing year is upon us, with Noel Brennan presenting his Captain’s Prize on Sunday night, June 21st. The huge task of running the show has been organised by Des Cleary and the Men’s Club Committee, leaving Noel free to enjoy the experience of greeting members, entertaining guests, and concentrating on the ‘big night’. The drawn Munster Hurling game between Noel’s native and adopted counties has thrown Saturday’s timesheet into disarray, but the hope is to start earlier on Friday to accommodate all. Don’t forget, to be in the draw you must have your name on the timesheet by 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Once the draw is made the sub-committee running the competition will not allow changes.
There will be the annual ‘Captain’s Scramble’ on Wed night at 7 p.m., with a shotgun start – using both the front and back nines if necessary. The scramble will be followed by presentation of prizes and snack food. On Friday, soon after noon, the first ball will be hit in the Captain’s Prize competition, preceded by Noel’s hosting of breakfast for the Course Manager and Staff, whose contribution to the success of Dungarvan Golf Club is immeasurable but much appreciated by all. Members (and their partners) are invited to the presentation of prizes at 9 p.m. on Sunday. Let’s hope for good golfing weather.

Dungarvan Masters
“We’ll be back – and soon, I hope” was the last word from New Hampshire’s Bob Rothwell, one of the hundred who played in last week’s Dungarvan Masters over the three local courses, with the final in beautiful Mount Juliet on Thursday. Golfers came from the four provinces, UK, USA and France, to enjoy sunny weather, golf a-plenty with lovely crystal prizes each day, good fun and camaraderie, bespoke hotel packages, quality restaurants – and all the rest that Dungarvan has to offer. The singles competition – for ladies and gents – was generously sponsored by Michael Ryan of Saltan Properties and Jack French and Associates. The shotgun start each day was ideal, with large numbers wining and dining in the clubhouses at Dungarvan, Gold Coast and West Waterford as they awaited the results and presentation of daily prizes.

Brendan O’ Brien and Tom Considine worked very hard to ensure the success of the Masters – the 11th event involving the three clubs jointly. The lads were assisted by Irene and Rogie, Austin and Tom, and Mark Linehan from the Gold Coast. The top forty – including our own Rufus Flynn - with the best two cards to count from three, had scores ranging from 65 to 78, and they were bussed to Mount Juliet on Thursday. The inaugural Dungarvan Masters was such a success that the organisers are already looking for ways to develop the idea for 2010, perhaps including a separate section for members of our three clubs.

David Crowley Weekend
David Crowley did it again! What an array of prizes we had for Saturday and Sunday, the best of woodwork pieces from David Crowley Custom Designed Furniture of Bunmahon. David is the fifth generation of carpenters and cabinet-makers to specialise in fine solid wood furniture in ash, beech, Irish oak, walnut and cherry, and he has been very generous with his sponsorship for years. There was a huge entry for both the Men’s Open Fourball and the Ladies Open Singles, and the happy winners went home on Sunday night with lovely pieces including inlaid tables, frames, jewellery box and chopping boards.

Jim Quinn, another of our members who has generously sponsored our competitions for many years, presented his Jim Quinn Agricultural Supplies prizes on Sunday night. Jim’s Singles competition had been played over Whit weekend, and he was mentioned in glowing terms by the Captain, Noel Brennan, who acknowledged the contribution of all the club’s sponsors: they are now listed on our website. Jim had valuable prizes of golf equipment, including a Calloway bag, shoes, clothing and carrier bag.

Jimmy Bruen
Rogie and Vincent were delighted with their panel’s input into this year’s Jimmy Bruen competition. Alas, our club team were narrowly beaten by Youghal in the semi-final on Sunday morning – after a resounding victory on Saturday. Sincere thanks and a vote of ‘hard luck lads’ go to John Gough, Ronan Slevin, Owen O’ Mahoney, Frank O’ Donoghue, Colm Kindregan, Michael O’ Mahoney, Gary Burke, Richard Mahony, Tony Brady, Martin Lynch, Michael McGrath and Des Cleary.

Snippets:  The matchplay draws are on display in the locker-room; look out for details of the Open Fortnight which is looming after the Captain’s Prize; look out also for details of the Men’s Club Classic, for teams of four, on Fri and Sat 17th and 18th July.
Captain’s Prize Returned

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be! Older members of our club, along with members of the Lynch family, reminisced fondly over the weekend when a Captain’s Prize of yesteryear made its way back to the club. A man in Cork who bought a furnished house recently noticed a beautiful brass carriage clock on the mantelpiece. On reading the inscription he found that the message was ‘Dungarvan Golf Club, Captain’s Prize 1957, presented by J. Lynch to the winner John B. Lynch’. Jack Lynch, in whose memory the annual matchplay trophy bearing his name is contested among the three local clubs, was our popular and hard-working Captain fifty-two years ago. Sadly, Jack Lynch died later that year, and Mrs. Lynch was elected Captain in 1981; son Johnny went on to be Captain thirty years after his father.

Many Hands!
Last week’s after-hours work on the course and club-house area, by a panel of volunteer members, was a resounding success. With more than forty willing participants, the group filled divot holes with a sand/seed mixture, and the eighteen fairways were completed in just a few nights; in addition, weeds were removed from between paving slabs, par-3 tees were sanded, and grass was trimmed around markers. The banter was good, and the crew ranged in age from youths to ‘ould fellas’, with a few of the fairer sex doing their bit too. The Pro shop gang were there, the Course Manager Anthony lent a hand, and nobody worked for more than an hour per evening.  Michael Kelly will take the voluntary work idea forward, and he will be recruiting for small jobs in the future. Michael has compiled a list of light tasks, and he hopes that member contribution in this manner will become a regular feature of club activity. Judging by the acknowledged success of the first project, with work done with banter, jollity and chat, voluntary work has a future at our club. Watch this space and the clubhouse noticeboards for details.
