OPEN FORTNIGHT Concludes this Sunday and we have been delighted with the enthusiasm and attendance of visitors and members who have been praising the course condition. We have another full week of golf with the Men’s Singles on Wednesday (Pat Stack), Thursday (Gleesons) and Friday (Tom Coffey Engineering). On Saturday we have the GSK 2-Person Rumble and we finish on Sunday with the Festival Trophy. The golfer of the fortnight, sponsored by Noel Devereux for our own members, will be decided on the aggregate of one’s four best singles cards over the two weeks. PLAYER OBLIGATIONS The Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU), in consultation with the R&A at St. Andrew’s, is supporting clubs in their efforts at getting players to total their scores and subtract their handicap in stroke competitions, to work out and total their score in Stableford events, and to enter their scores into the computer, hole by hole. This is intended to ease the work of busy committees. The Men’s Club Committee are now requesting members to oblige, and such a requirement is likely to be written into the ‘Conditions of Competition’ notice. Incidentally, it is opportune to remind players that, when playing Qualifying Competitions, they must return their scorecards. SPONSORS EVENING On Friday last, July 3rd, halfway through the annual Open Fortnight, we had a very successful 9-hole Scramble, followed by presentation of prizes for the week’s competitions. Many of our generous sponsors turned up, and the full house enjoyed a very pleasant evening, during which the Captains spoke of the outstanding support we have from sponsors, many of them with us for years. Captain Noel remembered fondly recently deceased and longtime member Jonathan Cullen; Noel also spoke of the ‘feel good’ air around the club, not least due to the huge collaboration of club employees and volunteer members, the weather we have enjoyed in recent weeks, and the affirmation lavished by our members and many visitors. Noel also spoke fondly of John Moroney who has been ill – not realizing then that John was to pay us a visit on Saturday, Moira Baumann’s big birthday, Neil Power’s marriage to Emma Kirwan (daughter of the late Noel), and he wished two of our prizewinners well, i.e. Jamie Nagle and Eoin Murphy, as they face the might of Tipperary in next Sunday’s Munster Final. Joe Murphy’s idea of a ‘bunker blitz’ for charity was well supported, and Vice-Captain Ina Considine was the recipient of a generous cheque for the Guide Dogs for the Blind fund. BELVEDERE TROPHY FINAL Seán Power and his team are off to Faithlegg on Tues. 14th for the final of the High Handicap event, taking on the might of West Waterford. We wish Seán and the team well, and we hope that the result will reflect the seriousness with which Seán took on the task of selecting, mentoring and encouraging the panel. John Gough’s Junior Cup team will play Carrick at Waterford Castle on Sat. 11th, and his Senior Cup team will take on Faithlegg in Yougal on sat 18th. Good Luck, lads! MEN’S CLUB CLASSIC As soon as Open Fortnight is over it will be ‘red alert’ for our Classic on Fri 17th and Sat 18th. Get your team of four ready for this sponsored event which will have generous prizes. The entry fee will be a mere €100, with re-entry set at €80. The format will be 2 scores to count on holes 1 to 9, three to count from 10 to 15, and all four on 16-18. This format is already spoken of as very attractive, and we expect to see many visitors from neighbouring clubs. DUNGARVAN GENTS RESULTS Mon 29th East Cork Oil Mixed Foursomes 1.
