Next Big Thing!
This week we host a 4-man Classic on Friday and Saturday, 17th and 18th July, with a beautiful array of crystal prizes provided by two long-standing, loyal and generous members.
We hope for a big turnout of members and visitors, and the format is very popular. The two best scores will count on holes 1-9, with three to count from 10-15, and all four to count over the last three holes. Entry will be €100 per team, with the facility to re-enter for €80. The time-sheet is on-line, and Tom Daly expects big crowds in the dining-room each day. Don’t leave it too late to muster your team. The prizes will be presented at 9.30 p.m. on Saturday night. On Sunday we play for the E.P. Kiely Memorial Trophy, when we remember the late and great Dr. Eamonn Kiely of Kilmacthomas. Many apocryphal stories are told of E.P's life and golfing times at Dungarvan Golf Club, and older members remember him fondly, usually accompanied by a broad smile. We expect a big entry for this singles competition, and sponsors Déise Golf World tell me that the first prize will be an electric caddie car worth €300, supplemented by an array of golf gear for the minor placings.
Belvedere Cup Final
As we go to press Seán Power is busy selecting, mentoring, coaching and cajoling his team of High-Handicappers to take on West Waterford at Faithlegg at 4 p.m. on Tuesday 14th. While he should be wrecked from the exertions of the Open Fortnight, we reckon that Seán has plenty in the tank, and that he has prepared his team well. We are not often in a final these days, so we wish the best to the lads on their travels. And we might even have the guitars out in the clubhouse for another great sing-song, led as usual by the inimitable Tom Coffey, Victor Mullins and Noel Hackett.
Junior Cup
We had a great start on Saturday when we beat Carrick-on Suir at Waterford Castle. John Gough had picked a strong team in Kevin Cusack, Eoin Stack, Michael O’ Connor, Brian Morrissey and Michael McGrath. The GUI Munster Branch referee decided that conditions were too bad on Saturday afternoon, so our match with Tramore was postponed to Sunday morning. Travelling reserves Declan Walsh and Michael Leacy were given a run in this match and we looked very good with two matches won. Michael McGrath had to go down the 19th for the decider: alas, he lost, so that’s it for another year. Well done lads, and thank you all for proudly representing us at this level. We wish John Gough well this weekend as he takes his Senior Cup team to play their first round in Youghal.
Open Fortnight: What a Success!
There was a large crowd of members, guests, visitors and sponsors at the second presentation of prizes evening, which was held on Friday 3rd last. It was great to see some juveniles among the prizewinners, not least Jason Nagle with his magnificent 45 points in the Gleesons’ sponsored singles on Thursday. Once again our great Scratch golfer John Reynolds took a share of the spoils over the two weeks; his main rival, Kevin Stack was on the missing list for a while – representing UCC and Irish Universities at St. Andrews. The Open Fortnight was very successful, generating welcome revenue for the club; the contribution of our sponsors was acknowledged, and Noel was fulsome in his appreciation when he spoke at Friday’s prize-giving. “Our sponsors fall into many brackets – new, old, members, local businesses, and we are trying to give them as much exposure as we can” said Noel. He went on to tell of how we have put the list of sponsors on the club website; we also purchase prizes from them, and stamp our prize vouchers with the names of retail outlets where the vouchers may be used. In summary, the numbers playing showed an increase on the 2008 figures, and there were many comments on both the value to be had and the condition of the course throughout the year. The remaining prizes from Open Fortnight will be presented on Saturday next, July 18th, at 9.30 p.m.

As open week comes to a close, our junior members can reflect on a very successful campaign. Not only were we entertained on Friday night by the BG’s (baldy guys) we witnessed our Captain Noel displaying more hidden talents. Rumour has it that MTV want a recording of Noel Brennan unplugged. Back to the golf and Jason Nagle continued his fine form, blazing around Knocknagranagh in 6 over par. He recorded a fine 45 points and won the singles sponsored by Gleesons. Dad, Colm has finally realised that its only a matter of time before Jason is a lower handicap. Other juniors to feature in Open week were Colm O’Hare & Conor O’Dwyer.
