PRESIDENTS PRIZE
Popular President Frank Lloyd has been busy purchasing prizes for both ladies and gents for the forthcoming President’s Prize which is just around the corner. Players should put their name into the draw sheet on-line - but remember that the draw is then made within each time block. Frank tells me that he is going with the Stableford format (from the Blue markers for men, but using the same tees for the 3rd and 11th as in the Captain’s Prize), and that qualifiers from Friday 14th and Saturday 15th will play the final round on Sunday 16th. The draw will be on Tues 11th at 7 p.m., followed by the President’s Scramble on Wed 12th - get your name on the sheet in the foyer; and we all look forward to a great President’s Prize weekend.

WET WEEKEND
Following the wettest July on record we had plenty of rain for the August Holiday weekend. After the success, on Thursday, of the weekly Ulster Bank Open, Friday was washed out, with very few playing. However, Saturday, Sunday and Monday saw plenty of players competing for the beautiful prizes on display., including golf gear from PGA David Hayes’ ’Pro Shop’, crystal and pottery. Preferred Lies were back, so the competitions were Non-Qualifying, with Michael O’ Connor’s birdie and eagle finish on Saturday giving him a level par win with 43 points off a handicap of seven. Eddie Elsted, not often in the winner’s enclosure lately, had a return to form with a 66 on Sunday to take top prize. Monday had Junior Captain Conor O’ Dwyer also scoring 43 off 7 handicap.

It was nice to see so many high handicappers in the weekend competitions, with Colm Bannon winning their category prize on Saturday and Gerry Walsh taking Sunday’s. We expected the course to be closed on Monday, but ‘not on your life’; apart from a little drizzle we were spared, so the many visitors and members at the weekend continued on the Bank Holiday.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES
A big crowd turned up for Monday night’s presentation of prizes, with Déise Golf World’s sponsor Graham Nagle presenting Michael Maher with an electric caddy car for winning the E. P. Kiely Memorial Trophy. Captain Noel spoke in appreciation of member and sponsor Graham and his generosity since he set up his golf store on the by-pass. Noel also spoke fondly of the late Dr. Eamonn ‘EP’ Kiely .and his place in the golfing lore of Dungarvan Golf Club, both on the course where he always won the money, and in the clubhouse where his genial personality won him many friends. Son Derry attended the Déise Golf World presentation, along with members of the Kiely family, and Ina Considine presented prizes to the ladies in memory of Ena Kiely.

Tom Daly Catering sponsored the Club Mixed Foursomes, won by Maeve O’ Riordan and Donal Verling; Tom also treated us to tasty snack food at the presentation of prizes. He was represented by his son Chris, who spoke of his father’s involvement at the club over years., and how the members and visitors had availed of the catering service during a busy season. Walter Cullinane, who won the Bank of Ireland sponsored July Monthly Medal, spoke of his pride and pleasure at winning the elusive prize; he, too, thanked the sponsors who have been there ‘forever’.

Noel Brennan will present his Captain’s Prize to the Juniors mid-week, while the club match play competitions are proceeding apace. Next weekend will be busy, with so many getting in practice for the President’s, but the Hurling Semi-Final will dictate a slack Sunday on the course. We have postponed the David Hayes PGA sponsored day till August 22nd, and we look forward to seeing Jamie Nagle helping Waterford in ‘giving it their all’ in Croke Park against Kilkenny.

JUNIOR NOTES
Last week saw a busy schedule with our juniors traveling to Tramore, Clonmel and Faithlegg.. We enjoyed considerable success, the highlight being Gabriel Leacy shooting 73 around Faithlegg. On Friday last we traveled to Clonmel for our latest match in the South East League. Conditions determined a reduction to 12 holes and our under 18 team were narrowly beaten 4-3. Jack Leacy, Ross Dunford and Colm Kindregan recorded victories. This leaves our team needing a victory against West Waterford. However our under 15 team continued to show their prowess with a 5-2 victory maintaining their 100% record. Kevin Walsh, Eoin Bergin, Jack Mullaney and Jason Nagle recorded victories while Dion Ryan and Ronan O'Neill were called in. Well done to All Concerned.
