AUTUMN OPEN WEEK STARTS THIS FRIDAY.
Its official- the children are back at school, the flowers are starting to fade and the evenings are getting shorter. The summer is nearly finished but the good news is that our open week brings some sunshine this week, starting with an 18 hole stableford for gents this Friday (4th) . This competition has been kindly sponsored by one of our generous members and his support is greatly appreciated. Saturday the 5th sees a long term sponsor of the club Garveys Supervalu host an Open Gents stableford Sunday the 6th is kindly supported by Gleesons the drinks company with an Open Gents Singles. Monday the 7th is an Open 3 Person Scramble (Any Combination) which should be a popular timesheet. This is sponsored for the first time by our very own 60.com. group who are great supporters of the club. For a full list of fixtures see below in the fixture list for details. Timesheets are available online or by phoning the office 43310 or pro shop 44707. We look forward to seeing you during open week which runs from the 4th to 13th September.
PETER CUSACK MEMORIAL TROPHY
There was a very big entry on Saturday in memory of our dear friend and fellow-golfer Peter, who died suddenly in recent years. Peter was remembered fondly at the presentation of prizes on Friday, when the Captain spoke of “an all-round nice guy, great golfer who played regularly and often represented the club in GUI competitions. Peter, from one of the long-time golfing families in the area, was also the club Hon. Secretary, and a good-natured humorous guy who brought smiles and fun everywhere he went.” Nearly 120 played on Saturday for the lovely prizes sponsored by the local branch of Permanent TSB, including many of Peter’s friends.
Brian and Barry Morrissey, Aonghus Walsh, Paul and Eoin O’ Riordan, Maurice Casey, Diarmuid O’ Neill, Paul Breen, Jimmy Moore, Nicholas McShane, Gerry Byrne and Martin Lander played, and many of their wives and children joined them later for a meal and refreshment to celebrate Peter’s life. Last year’s wooden spoon winner, Martin Landers, made amends this year by taking the top prize among their own group, with 41 pts, with Gerry getting the booby prize.
Friday’s Presentation.
“The summer is nearly gone – before it arrived, but what did I care as I basked in the sun of foreign climes” said Captain Noel when he presented prizes after the Friday Scramble – the last for 2009. Noel spoke of the shock he received when he returned to the news that one of our esteemed and popular members, Karl Fay, had died suddenly. Karl was a member for many years, and won many prizes in Ballinacourty; in recent times he played regularly with his friend and neighbour Pat Dineen, and in the 60.com Scrambles, despite failing health, and was always good for a wry chuckle with anyone he encountered around the course or clubhouse. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
Noel also spoke of John Cooke, a recent visitor from the US, who was in the area to research his family tree, not least his great-grandfather JB Cooke who was a founder-member of Dungarvan Golf Club in 1924. JB, a local clockmaker at Main St, was elected Captain in 1928, a position he occupied for eight years. Some of our older members remember the family, and they spoke of having clocks at home in the past with the JB Cooke name emblazoned on the face. Noel also spoke of his delight at hearing the news of our neighboring club at West Waterford beating Douglas GC at Thurles to win the Munster Final of the Irish Senior Cup. Noel went on to wish our ‘rivals’ well in the All-Ireland semi-final, and he expressed the wish that Dungarvan GC would emulate the feat sometime in the future.
The news that Roger O’ Connor is to be proposed for the position of Vice-Captain for 2010 – and Captain the following year, after Des Cleary – was also welcome news for the club, and Noel assured us that the Men’s Club would be in good hands for the foreseeable future. Finally, Noel congratulated our juveniles and their mentors for qualifying to play in the finals of the County Leagues. Our U-18s will play Faithlegg and our U-15s will play Tramore, both at a neutral venue at this side of the county. In wishing the lads well Noel said that involvement in both finals in our first year was very commendable. To bring the presentation evening to a conclusion Noel presented James Power with his Tara Crystal sponsored bowl for his hole-in-one at the 16th recently.
Left Hand, Right Hand!
The Annual Left-handers Competition was on Sunday, despite the showery weather, and the switch from Saturday paid dividends – with many participating for the first time. Organizer Jack Elstead was pleased with the turn-out, but felt sorry for the three lady citeógs who played only a few holes before the heaviest of the rain sent them packing. The winner this year was Alan O’ Donnell with a 67 nett. Rumour has it that a certain tall business figure in the town is so miffed with the audacity of citeógs to organise their own exclusive competition, that he is to donate a new trophy for Right-handers. He’ll probably win it himself! Results 1st Alan O'Donnell (4) 67, 2nd Brian Irish (13) 71pts 3rd Maurice Conway (7) 72 pts 4th John Hooley (5) 73pts Many thanks to our generous sponsors

JUNIOR GOLF NOTES
As the summer draws to a close our juniors had another eventful week on the golfing scene.Last Sunday saw Colm O'Hare upstage the seniors with a fine 73 gross to win the Dungarvan Junior Scratch Cup. Closely on his heels was Junior Captain Conor O'Dwyer who took second place. On saturday Philip Coffey took third place in the David Hayes sponsored PGA Professional Day. On wednesday Ronan O'Neill continued his fine form shooting 43 points to win the Junior competition. Ronan was followed home by Sean Daly with 42 points and Eoin Bergin with 41 points.Congrats to Ronan on reaching the Mens board. On Friday we run an unusual event with a 3 club challenge. Any 2 clubs plus a putter and Michael Maher showed his class with 40 points to win by 8 from Brian Looby and Jason Nagle. Our juniors have enjoyed a sucessful season culminating with16 juniors now on the Mens board. Thanks to Des Cleary for looking after the Junior Handicaps.
SOUTH EAST JUNIOR LEAGUE
With our Under 15 team already qualified for the final, it was the turn of our under 18 team last tuesday evening. Having secured home advantage on the toss of a coin we set out against the Gold Coast Golf Club in a playoff match to reach the final. Our under 15 team gave moral support by caddying for their older accomplices and they didnt dissappoint. Andrew Kirwan on his first cap played superbly to give us a early point.Three more followed quickly with Conor O'Dwyer, Colm O'Hare and Ross Dunford all winning on 16. Philip Coffey was level playing 18 with Philip Cashin and Colm Kindregan were a couple up when called in.
We can now look forward to the county final on Sunday 13th at the Gold Coast Golf Club. Our under 15 team will play Tramore and the Under 18 will play Waterford. Club sweaters are required.
