DGC WEEKLY NEWS 07/09/09 Print

NEW SPONSORS
We were delighted this week to hear of two new sponsors from the local business community. Amber Petrol Station – Costcutter Express on the Youghal Rd. have come on board to sponsor a Men’s Club competition during the October Holiday weekend. Owned by popular local Pat Keane who worked at Dungarvan Crystal for many years, the bright and airy shop has all you want in groceries, confectionery, hot and cold food, newspapers and magazines, car care products and much more. The well-appointed forecourt is roomy, with several petrol/diesel pumps, air and water services, ample parking and an automatic car-wash. Pat, as cheerful and affable as always, is well known for his involvement with both Dungarvan Soccer Club and Dungarvan RFC: it is only a matter of some time before he turns his hand to golf. In thanking Pat for his kind sponsorship offer we wish him the best with his business venture, and we hope that our members will support him as they do all our sponsors.

The Peter Cusack Memorial competition, held recently, has been sponsored since it began by PTSB – for which we are all very grateful to John McGrath. The winner each year is presented with a magnificent crystal perpetual trophy, made and donated by a close friend of the dear departed Peter, Tony Ahearne. The competition has a new sponsor for the foreseeable future, in Tony and his wife Jacqui. Speaking at Sunday’s presentation of prizes the Captain introduced the sponsors, and spoke of his personal satisfaction that so many new sponsors have come forward this year, mainly from the local business community and our own club members who want to give something back to Dungarvan Golf Club.

INTERPUBS CLASSIC
The Interpubs Classic for the Tom Shanley Memorial Trophy  kindly sponsored by Carlsberg will be played on Friday the 25th & Saturday 26th of September. At 100 euro per team of 4 of Ladies/ Gents or Mixed this represents great value for this enjoyable format classic. There are 2 scores to count on holes 1 – 12 and 3 scores on holes 13 – 18. Re entry per team is 20 euro per person. Timesheets are in operation now. We look forward to seeing you there.

Rules Night
A big attendance on Tuesday night enjoyed an interactive session on the Rules of Golf. The discussions ranged across all of the basics, what everybody should know, and some of the tricky situations which often arise on the course. “We learned a lot” was the consensus, with an acknowledged acceptance that golfers should have the rule book in their bag and be prepared to consult and discuss when unfamiliar situations occur. Do you incur a penalty when you knock a leaf or two in your practice swing? Are you obliged to be aware of your playing partner’s score, or just take his/her word when you ask? May you drop away without penalty from a tractor tyre mark? My ball is outside a hazard but near a yellow stake which is in my swing plane; have I a ‘free’ drop? Is it true that you may put a second ball into play when there is a doubt as to procedure?  We saw my ball going into a tree; it must be lodged there but I can’t see it; what will I do? My ball is within a metre of the green: may I repair a pitchmark on the green, may I have the flag attended, may I brush away the sand which is between my ball and the green? My ball is in a drain which is marked by red stakes; what are my options? Yes, some tricky questions to promote debate, and the general feeling after the rules evening is that we will have a follow-up soon.

Portugal
We were all delighted to hear that the Stack boys, Eoin and Kevin, playing off 5 and Scratch respectively and sons of Pat and Captain Ann, spent the past week representing UCC in the 1st European Intervarsity Championships, held in the Algarve. Playing at Alto and Pestana, two of Portugal’s top golf courses, UCC finished in third place (out of fourteen colleges) in the team championship, while Irish students took Gold, Silver and Bronze in the individual event. The lads really enjoyed the week – with five rounds of golf – and saw it as an ideal way to end a busy golfing summer before heading back to Cork for the new academic year. Portugal is proving to be very popular with golfers in this country, and I have heard of several of our club members who have penciled it in for a first or return visit. I hear too that dad Mick learned much when he took on sons Jack and Gabriel on some of Portugal’s finest courses, affording young Gabriel the opportunity to practice for his round at Fota on Saturday when he represented Waterford under-14s in the inter-county match. But all the coaching and practice didn’t stand to Gabriel and Jack as they failed to get to the quarter-final of the O’ Connell Cup Club Fourball Matchplay: however, they tool their beating like the golfing men that they are. Incidentally, if you are still involved in any of the matchplay competitions please check the schedule; if you need an extension, for any reason, you must make a timely approach to the committee.
