Inter-Pub Classic
The Interpubs Classic for the Tom Shanley Memorial Trophy kindly sponsored by Carlsberg tees off this Friday & Saturday. At 100 euro per team of 4 of Ladies/ Gents or Mixed this represents great value for this enjoyable format classic. There are 2 scores to count on holes 1 – 12 and 3 scores on holes 13 – 18. Re entry per team is 80 euro. We look forward to seeing you there.
Kevin Stack
Congratulations are due to Kevin on his new handicap of +1. We all knew it was only a matter of time, but when he did it Kevin did it in style. After his great score of 42 points in the President’s Prize in mid-August Kevin and his brother Eoin had their UCC golfing trip to Portugal for the inaugural European Intervarsity Championship, and many other competition since. However, on Thursday last Sept. 17th, Kevin had 46 points off the white tee markers. He scored 9 birdies and eagled the 14th when his 2nd shot back-spun into the hole. Then on Sunday Kevin featured again, scoring 40 points to claim runner-up spot. Keep it up Kevin, and we all hope that other members - young and not-so-young - will follow in your footsteps.
At Last!
I’m glad to hear that members are, at last, reading the notices we display. We try to keep members up-to-date on Local Rules, Conditions of Competitions, names of competition sponsors, whether it is ‘play as it lies’ or ‘preferred lies’ (placing etc). The notice-board between the locker-rooms and the men’s first tee is the best place to check out all the important latest; and, if you don’t read the stuff don’t be laying blame!
AGM
In reply to a query from a member, the Men’s Club AGM will be a few weeks later this year, as allowed by the club’s Rules and Constitution – ‘in singular circumstances’. It looks as though a date during the second week of November is very likely, and there is no word yet on a date for the Ladies’ Club AGM. The AGM of the Parent Club, of necessity, will also be late. Members see these meetings as their chance to review the year past and lay down markers for the following year. After such a successful year we confidently expect the ‘feel good’ factor to be much in evidence at the 2009 meetings. Members should be considering motions, proposals for changes of club rules, and suggestions for new faces on the committees. If you have the interest, the time and the energy there is room for you on committee; otherwise you may put your name forward for sub-committee work, e.g. compilation of results.
Course Manager
Anthony ‘Scholar’ Morrissey has just completed his first year as Course Manager; and what a job he is doing, ably assisted by Sully, Bernard, Eddie and the various seasonal workers. We have had many, many visitors throughout the season, whether in the Dungarvan Masters, Senior Pairs, Autumn Pairs, or at some of our many Opens throughout the year. Unsolicited remarks are always highly complimentary of our course and greens, and how well they are maintained. Scholar liaises well with Secretary/Manager Irene, and he is always interested in the views of members on aspects of course maintenance. He took on board the suggestion about varying pin positions, and he now endeavours to have six easy, six medium and six difficult; all the time conscious of the need to use the front, middle and backs of greens. Keep up the good work lads; we salute you and your efforts. Incidentally, this writer met Scholar’s predecessor and mentor Michael Mernin last week; after all his work and dedication to the club and course Michael is keeping very well as he enjoys his retirement.
West Waterford
We were glued to the GUI website over the weekend as they relayed from Tullamore all the happenings in the Irish Senior Cup finals. After winning the Irish Junior Foursomes in three of the past four years, our neighbours West Waterford had a convincing win in Friday’ semi-final, beating Ulster’s Castlerock 4-1. With Seamus Power abroad, West Waterford’s young team – with an average age of 20 – eagerly awaited the outcome of the other semi which was much tighter, when Galway beat Laytown & Bettystown 3-2. So, we knew we were in for an exciting final; alas, our neighbours were beaten, by an experienced Galway team, winners previously at Enniscrone in 2006. We salute Mark Shanahan, Philip Spratt, Gary Hurley, David Curran and Philip Walsh, along with the entire panel and team management. While we commiserate with them for not having won, we congratulate West Waterford for doing so well in this prestigious competition – the most sought-after pennant in Irish amateur golf.
