DUNGARVAN JUNIOR GOLFERS DO THE DOUBLE!
Dungarvan Golf Club completed a rare double at the Gold Coast Golf Club last Sunday in winning the U-15 and U-18 South East League Finals. Our Under 18’s got the ball rolling with a hard fought win over Waterford. On a beautiful day we recorded a 4-3 win with Andrew Kirwan winning the final match on 17. Conor O’ Dwyer, Colm O’Hare and Philip Coffey had already put 3 points on the board.
Our under 15’s played Faithlegg and with inspired play from Jack Leacy and Kevin Walsh, we were quickly in control. Jack Mullaney won another on 16 and Ronan O’Neill took the trophy home with a win on 16. With 4 matches in the bag, Eoin Bergin and Sean Daly were called in. At the presentation, Michael Murphy from the Golfing Union of Ireland praised their efforts with Junior Golf. Accepting the trophy, Junior Captain Conor O’Dwyer thanked the Junior Conveynors at Dungarvan for their efforts in securing these titles.
CLONEA CUP
In last Saturday’s Golfer of the Year Competition, the Clonea Cup, junior member Philip Coffey romped home with a 65 nett to win by a staggering 4 strokes. Philip’s remarkable round off the blue tees included 3 birdies. Jim Quinn claimed second place with 69 followed closely by Tony Brady with 70 nett. Donal Williams won the gross prize with 70.
SOUTH EAST JUNIOR ALLIANCE
The first outing for the 2009/2010 season was held in Dungarvan golf club last Sunday in lovely calm and pleasant conditions. The event was well supported from a wide range of clubs from all over the South East Region. The recently hollowtinned greens obviously didn’t deter Club Vice-Captain Des Cleary’s form. He produced a marvellous 44pts to win by a point from Conor O’ Brien. Competitors from Waterford, Callan and West Waterford also feautured in the prizes.

FORTY YEARS AGO
The history of Dungarvan Golf Club, and that of its many ‘characters’ are regularly mulled over in the clubhouse, especially in grouch corner and by the usual suspects! Recently we listened to Maurice McHugh as he regaled us with the details of the club’s 1969 capture, for the first time, of the Brennan Cup. We beat a highly fancied Baltinglass team by four matches to one in the Final at Arklow – on the same day that Castletroy of Limerick dumped us out of the Irish Junior Cup in Killarney. The clash of fixtures affected our team selection for both events, and it looked bad when Eamon Kiely and Jim O’ Keeffe were beaten in the first match of the Brennan Cup on the 20th – having been four down at one stage. However, four wins on the trot gave us a decisive win, and the men involved were Niall O’ Kennedy and M. O’ Connor, Austin Deasy and John Curran, Maurice McHugh and Stephen O’ Connor, and Pat O’ Connell and Pat Veale. Thanks, Maurice for the details.
