ASHES DUNGARVAN V’S LISMORE
On Saturday Vice Captain Declan Glavin brought his Lismore team to Dungarvan for the second leg of the 2009 Ashes. Holding a ten hole lead from last week’s home contest and determined to add to Lismore’s six wins in a row, Declan made a number of changes, drafting in himself and club Captain Maurice Cahillane, among others. Equally determined to break Lismore’s dominance this decade, home manager Des Cleary also made some changes.
Under a clear blue sky battle was joined and all competitors seemed to be enjoying the experience, determined to bring victory to their own side. Dungarvan seemed to be getting the upper hand in the first few matches. Veterans of many a sporting contest Mossie Walsh and Roger O’Connor had their hands full with Declan Glavin and Kevin Roche in a high quality contest, with neither pair able to get a sustainable lead on the other. The next three matches were all going in the home side’s favour, with Captain’s Prize winner Tony Keaver & junior star Jack Leacy building a lead over Maurice Cahillane and Ray Murphy. Club low handicap golfer Kevin Stack and big hitting Gary Burke were also getting the upper hand on President James Bennett and last week’s big winner Jordan Shanahan. Vice President John McGrath and Frank Fenlon were suffering at the hands of former club Captains John Reynolds and Liam Fitzgerald.
Addressing the balance in Lismore’s favour were last week’s high scoring Anthony O’Rourke and big points winning Kieran Bennett who were in the process of building a five hole lead over wily campaigners John Gough and Jack Elstead. Also struggling to match their opponents were club President Frank Lloyd and incoming handicap secretary John Considine, who were in the process of falling behind by four holes to last week’s winner Paddy O’Leary and his partner Sean Daly. The next two matches were very tight with little to separate the quality pairing of Michael Kelly and Seamus O’Neill and their opponents Michael O’Regan and Ted O’Leary. The in form Dermot Walsh and ever reliable Johnny Norris were being kept in check by young Stephen Bennett and Lismore’s handicap secretary Paul McCarthy.
When the first match reached the seventeenth tee box still dead locked and the final match left the eleventh green four up to Lismore, the on course reporter advised that the visitors held a two hole lead on the day, twelve up overall. This news spurred the home manager to visit each pairing in turn, to encourage them to even greater efforts. The top match finished all square, with the next three matches going to the home side, four up, two up and two up respectively. The visitors then won the next two but only by two up and one up, due to the determined fight back by the home side. Faultless golf on the back nine by the home team in the next two matches broke open a tight affair and resulted in massive wins of plus six for both pairs. These points meant that for the first time Dungarvan got their noses in front (by three). However last year’s President Pat Bennett and partner Shane Roche birdied the twelfth to retain a two hole lead over fancied home pairing of Martin Lynch and Nicky Norris. Former Captain Tadhg Sheehan and partner ex President Sean Wade were two down to Jason Corcoran and Kieran Alcock, as were big hitters P J Kindregan and Ivor Bagge to Dave Lonergan and Frank Roche. With holes running out Michael McGrath and junior Gabriel Leacy slipped five down to winners from last week Pat Moore and Eamon O’Shea.
To recover from this position would require a super human effort by all eight home players, which began when Martin Lynch and Nicky Norris covered the final seven holes in two under to turn a two hole deficit into a one hole victory. The comeback continued when Tadhg Sheehan and Sean Wade clawed back their two hole deficit to finish all square. The outcome was now balanced on a knife edge. P J Kindregan and Ivor Bagge reduced their deficit to lose by just one. The final talented pair used a combination of experience and youthful exuberance to stem the charge and under par golf saw them reduce the margin to just two, thereby ensuring victory for the home side for the first time since 2002.
Both teams retired to watch the visiting Presidents beloved Newcastle United battle unsuccessfully to retain top spot in the Championship. However, the very welcome fare provided by Tom and Rita helped lift the spirits of everyone present and the ever smiling presence of Lauren behind the bar ensured all returned home in good spirits!
