DEISE GOLF WORLD (Graham Nagle) GENTS WINTER LEAGUE
Despite the rain and wet underfoot conditions the Winter League, which will continue for eight rounds, started at the weekend. This year a player may play any or all days from Thursday to Sunday, but Friday saw nobody on the course. Fourteen teams of eight will contest the league, with four scores counting each week. Remember, if you have not paid the entry fee your score will not be included: likewise, later, if you have not paid your annual sub. As readers will note from the lists below, we have some new teams – and new faces - all trying to wrest the crown from Fr. Twomeys’. ‘Slim and none’ I hear you say!

WHAT ANOTHER YEAR !
As Des Cleary takes over the Captaincy for 2010 – and we all wish him the best in his endeavours – we celebrate a very successful 2009. Approaching the Men’s Club AGM, the consensus among the members is that, no matter what yardstick is employed, we had a great golfing year. The committee is fully satisfied with the member and visitor reaction to all golfing activities. Lucky with the weather throughout the year, we had huge entries for the usual complement of weekly competitions, Open Fortnight, September Open Week, matchplay events, Junior golf, Classicsand 3-course events, interclub matches, Enright Eurospar Winter League, Golfer of the Year (based on eight very successful ‘majors’) and much, much more. Sponsors, as ever, were generous: indeed it was heartening to know that in tough times we had many new sponsors, not least from among the members. The outgoing committee has basked, deservedly, in the affirmation which came their way throughout the year. Well done guys! And, importantly, the 2009 balance sheet was good too.
