RAIN AND MORE RAIN !
It happens very rarely, but the course was closed for the weekend. The downpours were so heavy from Wednesday that it was scarcely possible to go up the avenue. The course shipped tons of water, so Course Manager Anthony advised that we be prudent and close for the entire weekend. When weather conditions are severe, players are advised to check the Time sheet on the Computer for any notices of Course Closure or Competition changes. It is endeavored that messages/course information will appear as soon as possible to keep members fully informed.
However, despite the disappointment of Winter League players and Thursday night’s 45 devotees, the clubhouse was buzzing. The Pro shop was open over the weekend, doing brisk trade in Christmas gifts, and Tom Daly in the kitchen cooked his usual Saturday and Sunday lunches – always sure to attract couples and families to dine in our comfortable surroundings. Others just came for morning coffee/afternoon tea, or just to catch up with the local goings on.
DECISIONS ON RULES OF GOLF
The Rules are changing! Again? The rules of golf are reviewed regularly by the Royal and Ancient at St Andrews, and every two years a new version of the book entitled ‘Decisions on the Rules’ is published. The R&A has just announced 30 new Decisions, 49 revised Decisions and one withdrawn Decision for the 2010-2011 edition. The changes will take effect on 1 January 2010. ‘Decisions on the Rules of Golf illustrates the breadth and scope of possible Rules situations that must be addressed,” said The R&A’s Director of Rules and Equipment Standards, David Rickman. “We regularly re-visit and amend the Decisions book to ensure that it remains current and relevant to the modern game. The new book contains over 1,200 cases, posed in a question-and-answer format, which will clarify any ambiguity that may arise after consultation of the Rule book.”
The R&A has also issued a statement of principles regarding the use of electronic devices, including distance-measuring devices. The R&A first allowed the use of distance-measuring devices by Local Rule in January 2006 and are reaffirming that these devices may be used to measure only distance and must not be able to measure other conditions such as wind speed or direction, the slope of the ground or the temperature. At Dungarvan G.C. we have ordered copies of the new book; if you have any questions on the rules you are welcome to enquire from officers or committee members.
