GUI MUNSTER BRANCH
All roads led to Mallow last week when Maurice and Noel represented Dungarvan GC at the Annual Delegates’ Meeting, which was as interesting as ever for the huge gathering. In his Chairman’s address Michael Cashman referred to the weather which did its best to upscuttle the Cups and Shields Competitions, and he thanked all those involved, congratulating Waterford Castle (Irish Junior Foursomes) and Nenagh (Jimmy Bruen Shield) for keeping the Munster flag flying by winning National Titles. Michael Murphy spoke at length about the new, but very successful, Junior Golf Coaching Scheme – which is now operating on a county basis. Clubs were consulted widely, and a Liaison Officer in each county ensures that any promising youngster is taken for regular elite coaching throughout the year.
The Munster Hon. Sec. in his report referred to “the winds of change, with clubs feeling the pinch after a year of diminishing memberships and financial hardships brought about by the downturn in the economy, job losses and generally less disposable income. Green fee income has been severely reduced, and drastic measures are being taken by clubs, such as reducing staff numbers, shorter working week etc. and the promise of increased fees.”
The CONGU Handicap Scheme continues to provide problems for clubs and Handicap Secretaries, who are adopting different methods in dealing with general play, some taking the view that it is at the Annual Review that General Play cuts can be made, which is not the case. At the Munster AGM the view of the Branch is that it is time for Clubs to take ownership of the system. In this regard, if any Dungarvan golfer has a difficulty re handicap adjustment, the feeling at our recent AGM was that exhaustive efforts should be made at club level before any member would involve a Golf Union: Michael Lawlor of the Munster Branch also advocates this approach.
WEST WATERFORD ABÚ
“For such a new club as West Waterford to attain the status of ‘Munster Club of the Year for 2009’ is very creditable and they can be justly proud” said Munster Branch Chariman Michael Cashman at the Mallow meeting. The citation mentioned especially the work done with the Junior section of the club, who have won seven Munster and three National championships in a few years. In addition, Seamus Power, arguably the club’s most illustrious son has won the National Youths Championship on three occasions; and the club were beaten finalists in the 2009 Senior Cup, with a team whose average age was a mere twenty years. In the company of Pat, Justin and Austin Spratt- and many other members – Captain Lanson Kelly accepted the Criostal na Rinne sponsored trophy and spoke of the marvellous work done at the club by the Spratt family. He acknowledged the input of the local PGA Professional David Hayes, and dedicated the win to Pat Spratt, not least for his work on maintaining such a fine course. All at Dungarvan GC congratulate and salute our friends, fellow-golfers and all concerned at the West Waterford club.

CARE FOR THE COURSE

Please take note.
