ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS
The Management Committee wishes to remind members that the annual subscription must be paid by 31st December. The Club relies heavily on members’ co-operation at this time of year with payment of membership fees, so your assistance over the coming few weeks regarding settling of accounts would be greatly appreciated. Payments are accepted both in the office and bar.  Please bring your invoice with your remittance as this will enable us to process your payment more promptly.

Lions Club
Dungarvan Lions Club do tremendous work throughout the year to bring some light into the lives of many. At Christmas they co-ordinate the task of distributing basic provisions to the many needy families in the area; the huge logistical task is effected with ease by the Lions and they deserve our support. As in previous years we have Open Competitions over a full weekend from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th December, and the prizes are sponsored once again by Ben O’ Neill. If we can judge from last year Ben is likely to provide Radio, DVD, Hi-fi merchandise in his usual generous way. We hope that the weather smiles on us and that members and visitors will support this worthy cause. Watch out for notices and on-line timesheets.

Party Time
Tom Daly catering put up the finest of Christmas fare on Wednesday for the 60.com group, and they certainly know how to enjoy themselves. They had hardly finished dining when the ‘craic’ started: “it must have been the wine” I heard one senior citizen quip as he tried to explain the raucous behaviour. “All good and clean wholesome fun” said another as the jokes and slagging supplemented the singing and recitations. “When it comes to carol singing the choir at The Friary are only trottin’ after us” said organizer-in-chief Tom Phelan. Tom Daly did it all again on Friday for the Ladies’ Club, when a huge crowd enjoyed his sumptuous and seasonal fare. I had better not reveal closing time that night, and it seems that they just wanted to outdo the 60.com crew. Incidentally, our club has become very popular for office parties at this time of year. Just call into Tom Daly or Secretary/Manager Irene and they’ll help you with the details.

Playing Around
This is not about TigerWoods! This is about the course set-up in January, when it has been proposed to start all competitions on the 10th. We have not tried this before, and the rationale behind it is that the 2nd green is always the last to thaw in frosty weather. By starting on the 10th we’ll get away earlier on frosty mornings. Many members realize that the protection of the greens in frosty weather is a priority. Course Manager Anthony and his crew have often explained that walking on frosty greens ‘burns’ the grass and it takes time and work to heal them. So, let’s see what happens from January.

The Funny Side of Golf!
This is about Tiger Woods - who is so rich that he owns lots of expensive cars; the cool thing is now he has a hole-in-one. He should have used a driver, and it was the first time he failed to drive 300 yards, and in fact he drove into a hazard. Yes, he was all over the place, more like a rabbit than a Tiger. Usually decisive, this time he couldn’t decide between wood and iron as he crashed into both a fire hydrant and a tree. While playing a-round his pinpoint accuracy let him down as he took his eye off the ball. Apparently the police asked Tiger’s wife how many times she hit him. She said “I don’t know exactly, but put me down for a 5.” His major sponsors Gillette said he had a close shave.

Rules of Golf
Readers seem to enjoy questions on the rules, so, when space permits I will include some. This time it is True or False, with answers given at the end. 1. Your ball has become unfit for play as its surface is scratched or scraped. T/F? 2. In a four-ball stroke play competition a player may play the whole round without a partner. T/F? 3. A Stableford is a form of stroke play. T/F? 4. The penalty for agreeing to waive the operation of any Rule is disqualification T/F? 5. A player must stand within the teeing ground to play his tee shot? T/F? Answers: 1.False: the ball must be visibly cut, cracked or out of shape. 2. True. 3. True, as is a vPar event. 4. True. 5. False: providing the ball is within the teeing ground you may stand outside it.
