Annual Subscriptions
The Management Committee wishes to remind members that the annual subscription must be paid by 31st December. The Club relies heavily on members’ co-operation at this time of year with payment of membership fees, so your assistance over the coming few weeks regarding settling of accounts would be greatly appreciated. Payments are accepted both in the office and bar. We would also remind members that those who’s subscriptions are not paid by 31st December will not be allowed use the course or clubhouse facilities and will be disabled from using the internet Tee Booking system.

Lions Weekend
Don’t forget to support our Annual Lions Open Competition this weekend from Thursday to Sunday. Ben O’ Neill has agreed to sponsor the prizes again, saying that “the Dungarvan Lions Club do tremendous work in co-coordinating the local effort at Christmas; they deserve support.” Ben was referring to the task involved towards ensuring that nobody in the area has to be without a Christmas Dinner. For many years the various agencies in the area worked independently at this important job, but some families were forgotten while others received more than they required. Now the work is streamlined, and the whole community is indebted to Dungarvan Lions. Our Men’s Club competition is Open over four days from Thursday to Sunday, with entry set at €10 for members and €20 for visitors; all we want now is dry weather to ensure a generous cheque to the Lions.

Presentation of Prizes
Captain Des Cleary will present all outstanding prizes on Sunday 20th at 6 p.m. Bank of Ireland Monthly Medals and Golfer of the Year prizes, Ulster Bank Open (final) prizes, the Martin Lynch and other Matchplay Prizes, Ben O’ Neill’s Lions Club Open prizes, and Tara Crystal Hole-in-One prizes will all be distributed, bringing a great year’s golf to a close. As those who were at the Men’s Club AGM will remember, our balance sheet was very positive – reflecting the response of members and visitors to our many competitions during the year. The weather smiled on us throughout, our many, many loyal sponsors (listed on the club website) were there, as ever, and our team events and three-course classics attracted teams from far and near. We are grateful, too, to the members of neighbouring clubs who visit regularly.

Fair Play Award
At the European University Sports Association (EUSA) General Assembly in Vienna last weekend, two of our members, Kevin and Eoin Stack, represented UCC to receive the Enno Harms Fair Play Award. The lads were part of the 5-man UCC team which won the Bronze Team Prize at the European Intervarsity Championships in Portugal’s Algarve in September, and the organizers were very impressed with the UCC approach. The Cork students involved were seen by both the organizers and participants to be ideal ambassadors for their college and the game of golf. While they were keen contestants on the course over four days, they wasted no opportunity to spread the Irish charm, engaging in warm conversation with everybody they met. The organizers were especially impressed at the sporting way by which the UCC team came forward to forfeit a Team Nett Prize when they realized that the scorers had computed the results incorrectly. Congrats to Eoin and Kevin, to their mate Olan Barrett from Fermoy who often visits us at Dungarvan, and to team members Declan King and Ed Stack.

Christmas Day
Both course and clubhouse will be closed on Christmas Day. However, we will be open otherwise throughout the holiday season, with Open Competitions each day for valuable prizes. They include the Amber/Costcutter (Youghal Road) day which was postponed in October due to bad weather. Amber boss Pat Keane, well known to locals from his time at Dungarvan Crystal and Dungarvan AFC, came forward earlier in the year with an offer of sponsorship, and he is looking forward to presenting his vouchers to the prizewinners. In return we hope that our members will call in to his filling station/shop/deli beside the entrance to Childers Estate - to ‘give him a turn’.

Rules Corner
We had the usual debate after last week’s teasers, with some guys simply not accepting that they could be wrong! So, here goes with this week’s questions. 1. Is there any restriction on the size of a driver head? 2. While playing a hole is it always permissible for a player to repair damage to a putting green, whether or not his ball is on the green? 3. In what way may a player remove loose impediments from his line of putt? 4. In a stableford competition what is the penalty if a ball putted from a position on the green hits another ball in play which is at rest and also on the green? 5. In stroke play, if a player marks his ball on the green with a tee that he used on the teeing ground, what is the penalty? Answers: 1.Yes, see Rule 4-1, and Appendix II of the Rules, which sets out the provisions, specifications and interpretations. Use of a non-conforming club leads to disqualification. 2. No. Whether or not his ball is on the green he may repair only a pitch mark or an old hole plug. The group may repair other damage to the green once they have finished playing the hole. 3. Any way he likes, provided nothing is pressed down. 4. Two strokes. 5. None, but it is recommended that he use a small coin or similar object.
