  • Annual Subscriptions
The Management Committee wishes to remind members that the annual subscription must be paid by 31st December. Settlement now would be greatly appreciated. Payments are accepted both in the office and bar. We would also remind members that those who’s subscriptions are not paid by 31st December will not be allowed use the course or clubhouse facilities and will be disabled from using the internet Tee Booking system.

    Lions Club Appeal
The weather was the winner at the weekend, severely hitting our annual Lions Appeal Open. With valuable prizes provided by Ben O’ Neill our generous sponsor, we have decided to extend the competition into the New Year. Scores from Thursday will carry forward when we play over the weekend of Jan 2nd and 3rd. In the meantime our Captain Des Cleary, in anticipation of a big entry when we eventually get around to playing, will make a presentation to the Lions on Christmas Eve. When I visited sponsor Ben O’ Neill during the week he told me of his latest move into laptop sales and service, an area close to his heart for a long time. So, when you go into Ben’s to buy your TV, Hi-fi equipment, musical instruments or CDs you may browse through his laptop selection, sure to find that Ben is the cheapest and best in town.

    Presentation of Prizes
We had a large crowd on Sunday when Captain Des Cleary presented all outstanding prizes for 2009. Pride of place went to Golfer of the Year P.J.Kindregan who showed that he was the most consistent golfer in the club this year. His aggregate score from five of our eight ‘majors’ had him well ahead of runner-up Jimmy Quinn. Bank of Ireland Monthly Medals for September and October were presented to Peter Mullanney and Paddy Barry respectively, while Pat Murphy of West Waterford had ‘the highlight of his year’- a hole-in-one at the 16th – duly rewarded with a Tara Crystal sponsored bowl. The Ulster Bank Final prizes went to Eoin Stack, Martin Landers, Kevin Stack and Diarmuid O’ Neill, and then Des moved on to the matchplay competitions. The Cunnigar Cup for Singles Matchplay, sponsored by several-times winner Martin Lynch went to – guess who? Martin Lynch, who beat Paul O’ Riordan in the final. Martin, along with Nicky Norris, was runner-up in both the O’ Connell Cup Fourball and Scotch Foursomes Matchplay events, beaten by Derek Power and Michael O’ Mahony in the former, and Tony Brady and John Gough in the latter.

    John Moroney RIP
Saddened at the passing of John last week, all at Dungarvan Golf Club offer our sympathy to his wife Valerie and family. His good friends, lecturer colleagues at WIT and fellow golfers Robert Hyde and Martin Furlong are in our thoughts too. When John joined our club he had enjoyed huge success at club, provincial and international rugby. A native of Clogheen, John won a Munster Schools Senior Cup medal with Rockwell in 1964; he then went on to win three Munster Senior Cup medals with Garryowen in 1969, ’71 and ‘74. While out-half was his best position, he performed with distinction on the wing, the position in which he earned his six Irish caps. He made his debut against Wales in 1968. In the first match of the 1969 campaign, against France at Lansdowne Road, John Moroney converted his own try and also kicked three penalty goals.
John played many times for Munster both at out-half and wing and wore the number 11 jersey in the 11-8 defeat of Australia at Musgrave Park in 1967. It was the provinces’s first victory over a major touring team and he had the distinction of scoring the game’s decisive try. However, his illustrious rugby career came to a sad end in February, 1975, when he suffered a serious leg injury in a Munster Senior League final at Thomond Park. May he rest in peace.
