Amber/Costcutter Competition
Last week’s 2-day competition, kindly sponsored by Pat Keane of Amber/Costcutter on the Youghal Road, was aborted due to inclement weather. After providing us with generous prizes Pat, formerly of Waterford Crystal (Dungarvan), was disappointed not to have been out for the prize-giving, but I have assured him that the competition will be resumed and completed soon– watch this space and the timesheets on the club website for further details. The weather also delayed to resumption of the Deise Golf World (Graham Nagle) Winter League, with the course opening very late on Saturday and Sunday; however, we hope to get going again this week.
10th Tee Start
For the foreseeable future we will start our competitions from the 10th tee, giving the 2nd green a chance to thaw. Regular winter players will know that the area around the 2nd green is always the coldest in winter and the warmest in summer. So, the ‘Stipulated Round’ is from the 10th and in sequence from there – and don’t be caught out by paying your money to enter and walking to the 1st to start play; if you do you will be disqualified. To conclude this section of the notes, it is worthwhile to have a look at the notice-boards in the locker-room and at the 1st tee. The ‘Conditions of Competition’ notice is always worth a look, as is the recently amended notice on Prizes.
Rules of Golf
This section of the weekly notes is proving to be popular, giving rise to debate among golfers. We are back to True or False again. 1. Some ice cubes left on the course by a spectator are obstructions, T/F? 2. A caddie may be shared by two players and may give advice to both, T/F? 3. Sand and loose soil are loose impediments that may be removed on the putting green and through the green, T/F? 4. In match play a player loses the hole if s/he plays a tee shot from outside the teeing ground, T/F? 5. In stroke play the maximum penalty a player may incur from playing a wrong ball is two strokes, no matter how many times s/he plays it, T/F? Answers: 1. T. 2. T. 3. F (on the green only). 4. F. 5. T
Members should become familiar with the Rules of Golf booklet, available free at the bar or office.
Seamus Power PGA Pro?
All at Dungarvan Golf Club were thrilled, as always, to hear good news of ‘a neighbour’s child’; we heard on the grapevine that West Waterford’s Seamus Power has been pursued by agents to turn Pro this summer. Having distinguished himself during his four years at East Tennessee State University, citeóg Seamus, son of Ned and the late Phil of Touraneena, currently plays off +2. He has majored in Accounting since 2006, and in his second year broke his college record for a 3-round score when he shot 198 (65, 66, 67) in the Jerry Pate National Invitational Tournament. Three times winner of the Irish National Youths Championship, Seamus tells me that he is busy preparing for the 2010 Spring/Summer College competition circuit, and he has recovered well from the knee surgery which hampered his progress last year. As he approaches his 23rd birthday prospective agents, impressed with his game and the number of ‘Golfer of the Month’ awards he has captured while in the US, see Seamus as starting on the Asian Circuit. We wish him the best and congratulate Seamus on his golfing feats thus far.
Gift Idea for Members
A book of ten green fees for €100 – how’s that for value! Towards encouraging members to invite friends, relations or work colleagues to play our course during the year, and to generate revenue for the club, Management has introduced a special members’ offer of 10 green fees for €100. These green fees can be used Monday to Friday, and otherwise by arrangement only. These €100 ticket blocks are available at the office or bar, and we appeal to members to support the idea.
