DEISE GOLF WORLD WINTER LEAGUE
The Deise Golf World sponsored Winter League, despite some of the most unfavourable winter weather we’ve seen in years, finally came to a conclusion at the weekend. Fews and Ballinroad contested the final proper, with Fews coming out the victors. We won’t go into the details of all the matches, but it is clear that the weight of wearing the Club blazer is no problem to some, with vice Captain Roger O’Connor and President Frank Lloyd both returning convincing victories. In the plate Silversprings overcame a strong challenge from the Highlanders to win out. Thanks and well done to everybody who took part in the Winter League, which is an important source of Club revenue over the winter months. A very special thanks also to Graham Nagle of Deise Golf World for his generous sponsorship of this event. The date of the presentation will be announced shortly.

SOUTH EAST LEAGUE:
Having led our section of the South East League going into the final round Dungarvan lost 9 – 3 to West Waterford at Mitchelstown at the weekend. This defeat relegated us to third place. The final of the South East League will now be contested between Mitchelstown and East Cork.

ROGIE BOY!
Popular vice Captain Rogie O’Connor celebrated his birthday in style on Saturday last by returning a fantastic 41 points. He must have also been delighted that his team won the winter league. Way to go Rogie boy!

JOHNNY MORONEY COLLEGE CUP
Dungarvan Golf Club were honored to hold this event in memory of former member Johnny on Saturday last, where family, friends and former colleagues gathered to play golf and pay tribute to him. As the rugby world knows Johnny Moroney passed away last December after a prolonged illness bravely fought. A native of Clogheen , Co.Tipperary, he started his illustrious rugby career with Rockwell College after which he moved to UCD  to further his studies. He duly joined Garryowen and, as they say, the rest is history. He won his first Munster Senior Cup 1969, the same year he made his debut for Ireland against Wales in Landsdown Road. He went on to be capped six times for his country. He also lined out for Munster on several occasions and was part of the side that defeated Australia in Musgrave Park in 1967, the province’s first victory over a major touring side.
He moved to Strawberry Hill in 1969 where he linked up with London Irish. Back in Ireland he continued to play with Garryowen, winning two further Munster Senior Cups in 1971 & 1974, until his playing days came to a premature end with a serious leg injury in the 1975 Munster Senior League Final v Cork Constitution. However, Garryowen’s loss proved to be Waterford’s gain as his academic career as a lecturer in recreation and sports management brought him to WIT. In 1971 he joined Waterpark RFC and in 1976 became the head coach with the club, guiding them to their first Munster Senior Cup Final in 1984. During this period he also became a Munster and Ireland selector and was head coach with the Munster Interprovincial Team. He was also president of Waterpark RFC in 1990/91.
After such a full life it was no wonder that so many of Johnny friends came to support this event. It seemed especially fitting that Robert Hyde, Johnny’s good friend and golfing partner, won the competition. Robert gave a moving speech in the clubhouse as he was presented with the cup. The full results of the outing are as follows: 1st Robert Hyde 40pts, 2nd Larry Kennedy 38pts, Gross Martin Furlong, 3rd Kevin Reidy 37pts. Front 9 Terry Penderville (18). Back 9 Frank Moriarty (19). Visitor Des Cleary (Captain). 4th John Manning, 5th Adrian Cunningham. Nearest the Pin 13th Martin Furlong. Longest drive 18th Frank Moriarty.

Club Matchplay Competitions 2010 will commence shortly. Entries for the Scotch Foursomes, Cunnigar Cup Singles, Scratch Matchplay Singles and the O’Connell Cup Fourball are now sought. You are invited to enter all three. Entry forms can be found in the Men’s Locker Rooms along with details/conditions of each competition. Closing date for entries is 2nd May.
SINGLES: Lower player plays off scratch and opponent plays off full difference between the two handicaps.

All players drive at each hole. Each pair then selects one ball (picking up the other) and play alternate shots to finish the hole.
