JOHNNY NORRIS CLAIMS CAPTAINS PRIZE
What a weekend we had! The sun was splitting the stones on Friday for the golfers who played their 18 holes qualifying on Captain Des Cleary's first day, with young member Patrick Enright returning the best score of the day with a 69 nett. However, Saturday saw a few showers and the scores coming back into the clubhouse reflected the gusts which were affecting many players. Bonmahon man Johnny Norris, however, didn’t let the wind affect his playing and he returned a fantastic 66 nett, with 10 pars standing him in good stead. John didn’t lose his cool on Sunday either, and continued to play a consistent round scoring 71 and claiming the prize that every member covets. Johnny has been a life member of Dungarvan for many years now and is a great supporter of the club. Robert Hyde, the WIT lecturer, continued his recent rich vein of form by coming second with 141 nett. Robert also had a 66 with 7 pars for his 2nd round. The presentation took place to a packed clubhouse, including a large attendance of the Norris family to witness Johnny accept his magnificent prize. There was banter in the clubhouse that our Course Manager Anthony ‘scholar’ Morrissey, who is Johnny’s
nephew, had given his uncle some insider knowledge! Des thanked all who had helped towards his weekend, including the course staff, bar and kitchen staff and the volunteers who had helped with the cards and entries. Des gave particular thanks to his wife Bernadette and the committee who have supported him so well during his year. He was delighted to present his prize to Johnny who accepted it with great humility .Dancing took place to the sounds of Brian Dillon’s disco into the early hours and a great night was had by all. A big thanks to Des from all staff and members for a weekend to remember.
STACK STARS IN CARLOW Dungarvan and UCC Club Member Kevin Stack reached new heights at the weekend, winning the Midlands Scratch Cup at Carlow Golf Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious amateur golf championships in Ireland. Kevin, playing off scratch, had never played Carlow before his practice round on Friday, but this mattered little as he shot rounds of 71 and 69 (level par total) on Saturday to lie just one shot off the lead. A third round 69 on Sunday saw him go into the final round with a 4 shot lead over Des Morgan (+3) of Mullingar, twice a winner of this event, and Irish International Cian Curley (+2). As the pressure came from his two playing partners, Kevin continued to putt particularly well, and although the 4 shot lead was reduced to just 1 with eight holes remaining, he would never relinquish that lead, and held on to win by a shot. So Kevin’s name goes on a trophy won by the great JB Carr several times in the fifties, and other such notables as Peter McEvoy, Padraig Harrington, and current European Tour player Gareth Maybin. Well done Kevin on a fantastic achievement. Incidently, Kevin will be representing Ireland on the 6 man Irish Universities Team competing in Malaga next week at the World Universities Golf Championships, and we wish him the very best in his endeavours there.
