LEACY WINS IRISH UNDER 16 TITLE
Jack Leacy continued to show his fine form last week by capturing the Irish Under 16 Championship at Dungarvan Golf Club. The Golfing Union of Ireland bandwagon rolled into town last week with Dungarvan Golf Club hosting the Irish Boys Championship for the first time. Excitement was mounting with reigning champion and senior international, Paul Dunne looking to win for the third consecutive time. He faced strong opposition from Rathsallagh's Jack Hume who was seeking to add a national crown to the four provincial titles won this year. Jack Leacy, Jack Mullaney and Gary Hurley provided local interest. Play started Wednesday in beautiful conditions with Dermot McElroy from Ballymena leading the way on 69.Leacy started poorly and dropped four shots over his first seven holes but rallied brilliantly to shoot 73 and remain in contention. Gary opened a disappointing 78 and Jack Mullaney shot 78.Paul Dunne opened with 79. Conditions on Thursday morning remained pleasant and the early players took full advantage. Dermot McElroy again shot under par recording 70 to open a sizeable lead.
Gary shot 71 to make the cut. Weather conditions worsened in the afternoon and both Leacy and Mullaney struggled early. However again Leacy showed his fighting spirit  to shoot level par on the back 9 and record 76.The cut fell at 154 with 51 players making the grade. Friday saw an improvement in the weather but a stiff breeze across the course made scoring difficult. McElroy continued to lead despite shooting 75 but Leacy made his move with a best of the day 72. Gary shot 75 to retain his place. Scoring remained difficult for the final round but McElroy continued to show his class and recorded 73 for a one under total and a seven shot victory. Hurley eagled the last for 73 and took fifth place. Despite a double bogey on 14 Jack shot 74 and took fourth place but more importantly held on to win the Under 16 Irish Championship. Players and officials truly enjoyed the facilities at Dungarvan and the event proved to be a tremendous success. Our juniors enjoyed the experience with many of them helping out as ball spotters and locker room attendants. Well done to all concerned.

AUTUMN OPEN WEEK COMING SOON 3rd –  12th SEPTEMBER
 Our lovely summer is starting to come to an end and while the blackberries are ripening and the harvest will soon be taking place we are also looking forward to our annual autumn open week.  This year sees a great variety of competitions including singles, fourballs and rumbles. The week officially kicks off on Friday 3rd with an open gents singles kindly sponsored by a member, Saturday 4th sees long term sponsor and popular local store Garveys Supervalu hosting their Open Ladies and Gents 18 hole Stableford while Sunday the 5th sees drink company Gleesons sponsoring again their Open 18 hole. OPEN SENIORS CONTINUE TO BE A GREAT SUCCESS.
The Open Seniors competitions held every Monday have proved to be a great success over the summer months. Golfers over 55 have been flocking to the club in great numbers to avail of the 10 euro price tag on green fees.  This represents fantastic value. We have also welcomed groups of ladies from other clubs most recently Tramore and Carrick on Suir.  So if you know of anyone else who hasn’t heard the news let them know: there are at least a few perks to getting older!

LADY  CAPTAINS PRIZE
This weekend sees the highlight of our golfing year with the Lady Captains Prize, kindly presented by Ina H Considine, taking place on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th August. Ina has been a member of Dungarvan Golf Club for well over 10 years now and has done trojan work for the club. She has served on committee for most of this time. All of the members would like to wish Ina and her Family the very Best of Luck for next weekend, and we look forward to good weather, good golf and a great weekend.

Golfer of the Year 
With just two ‘Golfer of the Year’ Competitions left, the race to become this year’s winner is well underway. Leading the way at the moment is Niamh Reynolds, with only a point separating herself and Mary Kyne. In third place is Marie Fives.  Full details of the Golfer of the Year are posted in the ladies locker room. The next GOY competition is the Lady Captains Prize this coming weekend and the final one on Tuesday 31st August.

LEACEY MAKES MUNSTER  TEAM
Not to be outdone by big brother, Gabriel Leacy was selected this week to represent Munster in the upcoming Under 15 Interpro's at Naas Golf Club. Gabriel has been playing well of late, notably in the Irish Junior Cup where he was unbeaten in our terrific run. We wish him well and are confident of him representing both Dungarvan and Munster with distinction.
 
COACHING
Tuition for Pre Juniors and beginners continues next Saturday  28th from 3pm under the watchful eye of Club Professional and County Coach David Hayes.
 
UPCOMING  TOURNAMENTS
Our next tournament takes place on Wednesday 25th August from 9am. Teetimes can be booked online at the club website. GUI cards are mandatory.
 
MATCHPLAYS
A reminder that our matchplay finals are due to be played on Sunday 29th August. An extension of 1 week has been granted to outstanding matches as a result of the course being unavailable due to the Irish Boys Championship.
 
DRESS CODE
All juniors are reminded that a dress code exists in Dungarvan Golf Club. This code must be adhered to at all times when using the course and clubhouse. Please ensure smart casual dress is worn at the club. In summary, no vests, football shirts, collarless t shirts or tracksuit bottoms please. Tailored shorts or trousers please.
