JOY PHELAN WINS LADY CAPTAINS PRIZE
What a weekend! Excitement and glorious sunshine all the way. This weekend we played our final major of the year – Ina H Considine’s Lady Captains Prize.
With over 70 ladies playing on Saturday and all eyes closely set on Ina’s superb prize, we were all ready for an exciting weekend. Emer O’Kennedy emerged as the clubhouse leader on Saturday with a fantastic score of 68, closely followed by Linda Hogan on 70 and Caroline Cullinane and Margaret Harty on 72. Amid great speculation, whispering, wondering – who’s going well and who should do well, Joy Phelan emerged as a very deserving winner on Sunday evening with a total of 145 – Joy, playing her first ever Lady Captains Prize recorded a 77 on Saturday and a fantastic 68 on Sunday to walk away with the coveted prize. Carmel Fox came second and Nuala Harty third. Home to don the heels and glamour!, we all returned to a packed clubhouse for the presentation of prizes. Our Vice Lady Captain Mary Phelan did a splendid job on the night. Mary and Des, our men’s Captain paid many glowing and richly deserved tributes to Ina, who has done fantastic work for the club. It said that sooner or later you get rewarded for your labour and I think Ina was rewarded this weekend. As she said, she was overwhelmed with the support and attention she received this weekend and it was fantastic to see all of the ladies present on Sunday night to acknowledge and show their appreciation of her hard work, dedication and tireless contribution to the ladies club throughout this year especially and over the past years. In turn Ina thanked Mary and Des for their compliments, she thanked her family, her hardworking committee, the bar, catering, pro shop and office staff, the course staff and everybody involved in making her weekend such a success and said it was a honour for her to have served as Lady Captain for the year. With the formalities over, we all enjoyed some wonderful food from Tom Daly and staff and celebrated for a while later!
