Golf in the Sun!
We had huge numbers on the course throughout a sunny weekend, playing in our Open Competitions for valuable prizes - crystal and pottery, and lovely golf gear generously sponsored by Jim Quinn. For many years we have had the Captain’s Prize over Whit Weekend, so the speculation has started on what weather we might expect on the weekend of June 19th-21st. We live in hope! Martin Murray and Ruth Hannigan’s Captains’ Prizes at the Gold Coast were a resounding success this weekend not least due to the ‘suncream and shorts’ conditions over the three days. Well done to Breda Conway and Joan Mansfield who featured, and Esther McGuckian (yes, ‘our own’ Freddie’s wife) who took the top prize.
Brian McGill (9) won the J F Rawlins Trophy on Sunday with steady golf, fourteen pars and a birdie on seven; he had the best gross score too. Michael O’ Connor won on Saturday off 8 with a great 42 points, once again with steady golf – three birdies and ten pars. James Power scooped the pot on Sunday with a hole-in-one on the 16th.
LADY CAPTAIN’S PRIZE
This weekend we have the Ladies’ Captain’s Prize, in celebration of the very popular Ann Stack. We all wish Ann the best for her Captain’s Prize weekend, not least in recognition of all the she has done – along with her committee – to run the Ladies’ Club. In addition, Ann and her ladies have always contributed handsomely to both club management and the affairs of the Men’s Club; and all the work is done with a smile
Dungarvan Masters 2009. This new 3-day Singles Competition for a Green Jacket, in association with Michael Ryan, will be run next week over the three local courses, from Mon 8th to Thur 11th. The Stableford event is open to ladies and gents, with prizes each day. Forty will qualify and travel to Mount Juliet for the final on the last day; non-qualifiers may participate in a separate competition on one of the Dungarvan courses. MATCHPLAY
Maurice Cliffe tells me he is still taking the last few entries for the Cunnigar Cup Club Singles, Scotch Foursomes, O’ Connell Cup Fourball and the Scratch Matchplay: but, you would want to get moving as the draw is imminent. Put your name and contact details on an envelope – and don’t forget the entry fee.
NEW BAG TAGS
Our new royal blue tags, with the lovely colourful club crest, will look very well when attached to players’ bags. Generously sponsored by Moloney Hardware, the tags are ready for distribution, and may be collected at the bar or in the office. With the 2009 sticker affixed to the tag, your bag will be immediately recognised and associated with Dungarvan GC. Thanks are due to David and the Moloney family for their generous gesture.
LOOKING AHEAD
Dungarvan Golf Club will be very busy over the coming weeks: so busy that we have had to postpone the Men’s Club June Monthly Medal (sponsored by Bank of Ireland) to an August date. Following on the large attendance on Friday’s 9-hole scramble, there will be another this week, as a fitting run-out before the Lady Captain’s on Saturday. Before that we have the ever-popular Ulster Bank Open on Thursday, and the Bank of Ireland Monthly Medal on Sunday. Monday has the start of the three-day Dungarvan Masters, when many visitors are expected; then we have the David Crowley Fourball Weekend, which always attracts a big crowd to vie for the beautiful wooden furnishing prizes. The Captain’s Prize (Noel Brennan) follows, with the start of the Open Fortnight hot on its heels. Yes – something for everybody.

Ladies Notes
LADY CAPTAIN ANN
The highlight of the Ladies Club is fast approaching as our esteemed lady Captain Ann will host her week-end on Sat/Sun, 6/7th June. A most unassuming lady, our Captain is full of surprises!! Born in Clashmore, Ann attended the Mercy Convent secondary school. She then went on to study Science in U.C.C, obtaining an Honours Degree. It was while in College she was aware of Pat and his friend Declan who were in her class. However, it was not until she came back to Dungarvan to her first job with the Presentation Sisters that she renewed her friendship with Pat! Ann teaches in Ard Scoil na nDeise, and is Transition Year Co-Ordinator which is carried out with perfection as only she would have it.
Ann has always been a very busy lady, she was past President of the Harbour Bridge Club, and is no mean golfer to boot. She plays off a handicap of 22, getting plenty tips from the men in her life !!
The Stack family are steeped in golf, Pat has been very involved in Club Activities, and looked after the Junior Section for many years, they have three fine sons, Tom, Kevin and Eoin who are all naturally talented golfers.
Ann’s idea of relaxation would be hosting dinner parties for family and friends – a brilliant cook and confectioner, Ann would have no problem feeding the multitudes !! When she is not organising everyone and everything, she loves to read.
I want to wish Ann, her committee and all my fellow golfers the very best for the week-end ahead, would owners of statues of the Infant of Prague please put them to good use on Friday night !!
LADY CAPTAINS PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. The presentation of prizes will take place on Sunday 7th June @ 9.00p.m..We look forward to an enjoyable evening.
YOUNGONES
Wed.27/05/09 was our “Captain’s Day” and we had a healthy entry, despite the fact that many of the group were away in sunnier climes. We were very fortunate with the weather, and conditions were perfect for golf, but for some of us who are in therapy !! i.e. having lessons from the Pro, it was not too perfect !! However, we had a very clear winner in Liz Walsh who was delighted with her first Captains Prize – keep up the good work Liz, you might make it 2 in a row.
