ELAYNE KIRWIN WINS LADY CAPTAINS PRIZE
What a week-end! Full of surprises and dramatic scoring, we trouped out on Sat in wind, rain and severe cold conditions to honour our Captain Ann, scoring was not the best but we still had a clear leader in Mary Fleming with 73nett.
Sunday was much improved weather wise, and needless to say the scoring reflected the day, Betty O’Mahoney came in with a 69nett to claim 2nd prize overall, Breda Mac took the gross, best first day went to Peg Phelan, and best second day to Maria Ryan, our treasurer and resident florist, who has learned some new tricks from David our Pro? I will have to interview her!
Guest prize was won by Ruth Hannigan, Lady Captain Gold Coast G.C. with a fantastic 40pts, well done Ruth.
What do we say about our popular winner Elayne? This lady has been playing superb golf recently and managed to stay focused over the two days to claim the coveted prize, well done we are all very proud of you !
Our very popular Captain Ann ran her week-end in her usual manner – everything ran as smoothly as possible despite the inclement conditions on Sat. Ann’s table of prizes were stunning, and if chocolate be the food of love, we were very loved – there was chocolate everywhere, most welcome with the tea/coffee, thank you Ann. Pat and the boys were very helpful in keeping us hydrated and fed with more chocolate at the 10th on both days, thank you boys – much appreciated!
A packed Clubhouse greeted Ann on Sun night for the presentation of prizes, introduced by her Vice Captain Ina who did a splendid job of Master of Ceremonies for the night ( a politician lost ) Captain Noel and President Frank spoke of Ann’s commitment to the Club. Surrounded by her family, guests, many friends and fellow golfers, Ann proceeded to her speech and presentation of prizes, a beautiful bouquet of flowers were presented on behalf of the Ladies Club, much deserved !
The catering staff pulled out the stops again with beautiful finger food, and music was provided by Brian Dillon, thanks for the waltzes Brian !! The dance floor was full with women, bopping the night away, a few very brave men took to the floor.
Thank you Ann for a wonderful week-end, and congratulations to all the prize winners.

CAPTAINS PRIZE
After Ann Stacks very successful Lady Captains Prize we now eagerly await Noel Brennans event moved from the traditional Whit weekend to June 19th, 20th and 21st. Noels roots are in Limerick City Garryowen to be precise, and noel cut his golfing teeth at Castletroy where he earned his pocket money as a caddie in the late 1950’s. Noel was too modest to regale us with his sporting pedigree, suffice to say he tried everything! He moved to a teaching post in Dungarvan in 1975, taking up golf within a few years. After a ten year break he returned to golf in 1997 and has served on committees since. Noel won the Captains Prize in 1984 so he knows what this weekend means to members. We congratulate Noel on his captaincy and wish him the best for his weekend.
Don’t forget, to be eligible to enter the Captain’s Prize you must be a Full Member of Dungarvan Golf Club for at least three months. This is a long-standing rule of the Men’s Club. This year there is an 18-hole competition on the final day, for those who are not eligible to enter the Captain’s Prize, e.g. Country, Overseas and Junior Members; non-qualifiers from Fri. and Sat. may also enter this competition.
BUCKETS AND SHOVELS !
On Thursday evening last 12 members showed up at short notice to do some voluntary work on the course. Setting about their task with an air of banter and fun, while employing some buggy-driving juveniles to keep the buckets filled, the volunteers filled divot holes on selected fairways, with the intention of returning this week to continue the work. So, if you’re at a loose end at 8 p.m. on Tues, Wed, or Thur this week, come along and get stuck in. However, you must bring along your own bucket and small shovel or trowel. Looking forward to seeing you – doing your bit for the club.
MORE RULES
The Lady Captain’s Prize at the weekend threw up a few questions for discussion. 1. She touched the sand in her backswing in a bunker. Was there a penalty? 2. She moved the ball as she searched for it in high grass? Was there a penalty? 3. She moved her ball marker to one side on the putting green when requested. However, she forgot to replace it, so she putted from the wrong place? Was there a penalty? 4. She couldn’t find her ball in a drain, so she declared it lost and went back and played a second ball from the tee: was that correct? 5. May you declare a ball unplayable when you can see it in a water hazard? 6. After a tee-shot her ball hit her bag. Was there a penalty? Answers: 1. Yes, two strokes. 2. A one stroke penalty and replace the ball. 3. Yes, two strokes. 4. No, you don’t have to find a ball in a water hazard, once you are sure it went in there. She should have taken relief by dropping a ball outside the hazard and adding a penalty shot to her score. 5. No. 6. Yes, and the penalty was reduced to one shot in the last Rules of Golf revision.
CAN’T READ, WON’T READ !
I wish, I wish members would read notices, whether in these columns, in e-mails, on the club web-site, on the scorecard, or on the noticeboards – in the clubhouse and/or adjacent to the first tee. We have been ribbed over the years for not keeping the members informed and up-to-date, so we all do our best. “Where’s the prize I won last Sunday?” Did he not read that the presentation is not till June 14th? “Who is eligible to play in the Captain’s Prize?” Did he not read in full the e-mail he received, or the text of said e-mail (enlarged to A3 size) in the locker-room? “You never told me I had relief, without penalty, from the hedge at the putting green.” Did he ever read what is on the scorecard. Not to mention the booklet – available free from the office – entitled ‘The Rules of Golf’. This paragraph might be construed as ‘preaching to the converted’: however, readers might spread the word among ‘non-readers’.
