CAPTAIN’S PRIZE WEEKEND
The wind blew on Friday and split the Men from the boys.  The sun shone, the greens were lightening, and we listened to the thunder in the bar as high-scores were justified in detail.  The book did a brisk trade, with generous odds offered across a field of two hundred and twenty.  The bar was a hive of activity, with the ladies club on board to support and help the men running the show.  Anyone who broke eighty felt he did well, with Saturday to come and a forecast of a calm sunny day.  Alas, the wind didn’t die, and Friday’s conditions were repeated.  The beautiful array of prizes drew much comment, not least the ships decanter and claret glasses for the winner.  After Friday and Saturday’s qualifying round Nicky Norris led the field with a 67 from Austin O’Connor 69.  There were a few 70’s and 71’s defying the windy conditions and fast greens.  The efficient committee had Sunday’s timesheet on the Club website before 10p.m. and everything boded well for an exciting Sunday’s golf.  An added feature this year was the competition for non-qualifiers, juveniles and country/overseas members.
Sunday was balmy all day, and tension was written on faces as drive after drive was ‘knocked’ or sent to the neighbouring field.  As the day passed, the gallery on the balcony were treated to exciting golf on the eighteenth, supplemented by radio reports from the course.  For a while Seamus O’Neill sat with a clubhouse lead, then it was Pat Powers turn and he waited an hour on 140nett.  But 50/1 Tony Keaver, recently returned to golf after a 6 year absence, stole the show.  His shot to the 18th green defied gravity and surface tension; how it stayed out of both lakes and stayed on the hearth of the green thrilled a huge audience.  When he finished in two more there was loud and prolonged applause for a popular winner with 139 nett.
In the meantime, Captain Noel entertained his guests in the dining room, including golfing retirees and ‘elder lemons’ Redmond Russell, Johnny Hogan, Maurice McHugh and Tom Mulcahy.  We all looked forwarded to the prize giving which started promptly at 9.30p.m.
Vice Capt Des entertained the gathering and gave some glimpses into Noel’s life and escapades; this set the tone for a fun evening, as many speakers contributed to marvellous celebration of the Captain’s Prize Weekend.  Tributes were paid to the many club members and employees, who ‘go the extra mile’ always, with an air of fun and friendship.  In his speech Noel remarked on the pride he felt in the Club, the honour of Captaincy and the gratitude that is due to so many for so much.  He spoke fondly of his wife Mary - at home keeping the ship afloat as he goes about his golf club business.
Done and dusted for another year, the Captain’s Prize weekend was a resounding success with many worthy winners delighted to take something home for the sideboard, and many others already looking forward to the next big one - Frank Lloyds Pres prize in August.
