OPEN FORTNIGHT. After a very successful Open Seniors day on Wednesday and Thursday’s Ulster Bank Open the Joe Murphy Warehousing 3 person scramble was an ideal way to our annual open fortnight. Joe supported teams of ladies, men or mixed . The course that day was dry and humid following overnight rain, and Joe gave the opportunity to make a donation to a charitable cause. ‘Costly bunkers’ said Joe ‘and you can dig deep’. For each time they were in a bunker players were asked to contribute two euro with a promise from Joe that he would match whatever participants put in the bucket. What a novel idea for us and nearly 500 euro was raised. I bet that county hurler Jamie Nagle along with his brother Graham and Michael Moore were in no bunkers as they scored a magnificent 13 birdies. It was no surprise that they won the Joe Murphy Warehousing scramble – but only just beating Noel Hackett Pat Stack & Kevin Stack. Noel Whelan furniture kindly sponsored the Open Singles on Saturday and the course was full all day. Just like other sponsors, Noel has been a great supporter of the clubs effort for years and we all appreciate his continued contribution. Another popular member Darragh Connolly (Pharmacy) invited several guests on Sunday to play in his sponsored outing. Once again Darragh provided valuable men’s toiletries and the prizes were as popular this year as previously. Please note the 'Golfer of the Fortnight' is sponsored by Noel Devereux (Confined to Dungarvan Golf Club Members) and consists of the best four scores in all 18 hole singles competitions converted to stableford points. Many thanks to all our sponsors for their continued support of the club. Frank has decided to go with a Stableford format for the two rounds, using the blue tees in the same way as Noel did. Neither will Frank seek difficult pin positions, very mindful of the general satisfaction with the course set up for the Captain’s. In addition, Frank says that one hundred (plus ties) will qualify to go forward to the final day. And what does the course manager Anthony Morrissey say? Anthony is delighted with the wonderful contribution of members over the recent weeks. He was referring to the voluntary work on the course, organised by Ex-Captain Michael Kelly and taken on by nearly 50 members. The work will be ongoing and Michael has several light projects in mind. Already there has been painting sanding, trimming, weeding and general tidying. Put your name on the sheet in the locker room and Michael will be in touch. On the other hand just turn up at 8p.m any dry evening. . What else did the course manager say? Anthony spoke of coins left on the greens – either dropped or used as ball markers “such small coins cause big damage to blades on greens mowers” he said. “so please ask the members to take care.” CHANGES TO LOCAL RULES Players have relief from the hedge around the practice green. Ask J.P, who played a magnificent pitch in the Captain’s Prize, just when he knew that a large gallery was watching. The hedge will soon become an integral part of the course. Players who decide to take a penalty drop will be asked to use a dropping zone. Watch out for the local rules notices. What else? We will soon be using Blue, White & Yellow tee markers with corresponding flags to show hole positions on the greens. Blue will be at the back, white in the middle and yellow at the front. It is interesting to note how many members didn’t know that they may remove stones from bunkers. DUNGARVAN GENTS RESULTS Mon 22nd Open 18h S/F 1. Gabriel Leacey (9) 45, 2. Jack Leacey (4) 39.
