Men’s Club Committee Meeting

As many members know the various club committees meet monthly, and the Men’s Club usually discuss all aspects of golf – competitions, prizes, handicaps, new members, junior affairs, applications for membership, club teams, correspondence, finance, Local Rules, communication with members, recommendations on the course and those for Management. In addition the committee addresses members’ queries, suggestions, observations, issues, concerns, criticisms, recommendations etc. So, don’t be shy: drop us a line by hard copy or e-mail, or simply leave a note in the bar or office. The committee welcomes such contact, not least as they see their role as service to the members. It is a long time to the AGM, so, if you want to air your views on any golf or club topic, the monthly meeting should be your target.

Annual Subscriptions
The deadline for payment of the annual subscription was 31st December. Over the coming days those who have not paid the relevant subscription will be disabled from using the internet Tee Booking system for booking tee times and entering competitions.

Congratulations!

It took a while, but at last our ‘real’ Secretary/Manager Irene gave birth last Friday evening to baby Cormac, who weighed in at a healthy 9lb 6oz. Both mother and Cormac are well, and we offer our best wishes to Irene & Tom for the future.

Rules Time

1. When is a player’s ball deemed to have moved? 2. In a match Jan’s stroke in a bunker moved the ball forward several metres but she failed to get her ball out of the bunker; she swings her club into the sand in anger. What is the ruling? 3. Pat’s ball is on grass on the lip of a bunker, and she has to stand in the bunker to play. She carelessly grounds her club in the sand as she addresses the ball. What is the ruling? 4. Jack marked and lifted his ball from the green. He later used a different ball from his pocket to putt out, and then played from the next tee. What is the ruling? Answers: 1.When the ball leaves its position and comes to rest in any other place. 2. Loss of hole. 3. No penalty as her ball was not in the bunker. 4. Two stroke penalty.

Things Only a True Golfer Will Understand

Humour was the order of the day, for many, during the recent Tiger Woods episode; it is lovely to notice that we don’t take either life or golf too seriously. When playing a round (as distinct from playing around!) we should also remember the following: Don't buy a putter until you've had a chance to throw it. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: a) You can immediately shank a lay-up, or, b) You can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. More of this distilled wisdom anon!

Prize Vouchers

In 2009 the Men’s Club streamlined the use of their prize vouchers in an effort to support generous sponsors at retail outlets. The committee is attempting to further improve the scheme, this year affording winners some choice as to where they may redeem their vouchers. As usual your voucher will be left in the bar, perhaps not immediately, and feedback from members will be very welcome as the season progresses. I also hear that distribution of prizes for the past two years has been carefully analysed, with details available from the competition secretary Noel. There is huge interest in where the prizes go, e.g. members or visitors, or who gets most, or what is the average, or to what extent the handicap system contributes to ‘a level playing field’. The findings are interesting.
