After last week’s disappointing loss in the Barton Shield area final, we were looking to restore some pride in the jersey with four matches taking place this week.

Our JB Carr team had an excellent hard-fought victory over Mahon GC in the Munster Quarter Final second leg which was played last week. We held a 3-2 lead after the first leg and we were at home for last week’s matches. We again had a 3-2 margin in our favour to achieve a 6-4 aggregate victory.

The first two matches were extremely tight and we lost both on the 18th. We then won two quick points on the 16th through Pat Stack and Johnny Norris followed immediately by PJ Kindregan and Pat Breen. This left one match still in play. Declan Walsh and John G Moloney took a 1 up lead on the 17th and with a half in par on 18, they came through with a 1 up victory (but it’s never as straightforward as it sounds).

Next up is a Munster Semi Final and our opponents are Tralee GC. We will play them over two legs, home and away. Tralee are at the top of the draw and they will have the choice of venue for the first leg.

On the same evening our Mixed Foursomes team were playing the Munster quarter final against Thurles at Mitchelstown. Manager Joanne Fitzgerald selected our strongest team in John Reynolds, Rachel Kiely, Damien Burns, Lorraine Troy, Kevin Walsh, Majella Moynihan, Donal Williams, Linda Buckley, Eoin Brackett and Mary Power.  John & Rachel played well but were always behind in their game eventually losing on the last. Damien & Lorraine were producing some fabulous stuff and ran out comfortable winners to lever proceedings.

All to play for with three matches remaining but it was proving to be a tight affair. Donal and Linda were also playing well and were dormie two up with Kevin and Majella were all square playing the final hole. At almost the same moment, Donal hit a wonderful chip stone dead as Kevin holed a four-footer for victory and send us forward to the Munster finals in Castletroy.

Over the weekend our Junior Cup teams were in action but unfortunately things didn’t go our way. Our Gents team were beaten by Williamstown by the odd match in 5.  Hard luck to our Ladies Junior Cup team who were beaten by East Cork in the Quarter Final on the 18th hole. They put up a tremendous performance and were unlucky to just fall short by one putt. Well done to the team of Niamh Reynolds, Cathie Whelan, Carmel O Brien, Mary Power and Bridget Ahearne. They were fantastic. Well done to all concerned. From players to caddies, managers and supporters, it’s an honour to represent your club and victory makes it a little sweeter. It’s not what your club can do for you, it’s what you can do for your club.

Domestically it’s hectic at the club. With Open week in full swing and decent golfing weather the course is extremely active. Aside from our usual fun comps, we had 565 competitive rounds played this week. Open week continues till next Sunday 7th July representing an ideal opportunity to invite a friend to play. The course is in fine shape and visitors are highly complementary of our facility. On that note, we remind members to take care of our course. Please repair pitch marks, replace divots and rake bunkers. Look after the course and it will look after you.

What a great day in Dungarvan Golf Club on Sunday (30th June) with multiple events taking place. For the men the Open Fortnight competition was the focus and for the ladies it was the interclub matches. In addition to this the hurling matches made the clubhouse very very busy. Those present were very generous in their support of our Lotto.

The numbers drawn in the weekly Lotto were 10, 18, 20 and 25. There was no winner of the Jackpot which increases to €4,600 next week! We had two Match 3 winner this week  – Brendan O’Kennedy and a joint ticket for Mossie Walsh/Maurice Cliffe/Denis O’Brien – each ticket wins €50 – congratulations to all of them.

The draw next week will take place on Sunday afternoon about 4:30pm. Come along and support us – all are welcome.
