Meet the Lady Captain, Mary Power
Mary hails from Cork. She is no stranger to the Deise as her parents were both from Waterford and she spent all the summers in the resorts of Dunmore East and surrounds. Following school, she studied at UCC and then had a distinguished career teaching Modern Languages at Middleton College for 35 years.
Mary is an avid sports person playing hockey, tennis, squash and swimming. Her lead sport was hockey where she played, coached and umpired at National and International level. She is a passionate follower of Munster and Ireland rugby travelling to matches regularly. She is also a keen Hillwalker and a member formerly of Blackrock Hillwalking Club and now of the Dungarvan Club. Her love of the hills has taken her as far afield as Equador, Chile and Argentina as well as the mountains and hills in Europe. She completed the Camino in one go carrying her backpack 800km in 3 weeks. No mean feat!
She started her golf at East Cork Golf Club 30 years ago and managed the Minor Team there to the National Finals. She moved to Clonea Upper with Angela, and joined Dungarvan Golf Club in 2013. Retirement has been very beneficial to her game as she has improved her handicap and now plays off 12. She still strives to get lower. She was on the Social Committee for 4 years and worked hard to make the Bank Holiday Scrambles and other events such a success. As Vice-Captain she also assisted the Get Into Golf Committee’s programme for the year.
It has been a very difficult year to be Captain and Mary has taken it in her stride and ensured a full programme of golf in a safe and controlled environment. We wish her well for her Captain’s weekend and pray the sun shines on her.
On Sunday evening the curtain came down on our most successful Open Fortnight in recent years. With decent weather and the course in fantastic condition, members and visitors alike took to the course in record numbers averaging over 100 competitors per competition. With a variety of competition, our facility attracted most favourable feedback and we look forward to welcoming back our visitors. Much praise is due to both Captains, our staff and committee members, but most importantly our sponsors in making our Open Fortnight so successful. We are very grateful to Waterford Crystal, Country Store, Skellig Crafts, All Rounder, Quinlan Butchers, The Moorings, Eurospar, A-Tec Security, Geaney O’Neill, Kelly’s Pharmacy, Dungarvan Nissan, Kiely Appliance Repair, Helvick Seafood, Poker Classic, Sixty.Com and a very generous member. Next weekend, the spotlight falls upon our esteemed Lady Captain Mary Power as she presents her Captain’s Prize .
In other News, well done to our Pierce Purcell team who enjoyed a first round win last Saturday. Playing three matches away against Waterford Castle, Manager Matt Curran was justifiable proud of his team as they advanced to the next round.

The last day of our Open Fortnight took place on Sunday 26th July. The competition of the day was the Festival Trophy (Sponsored by Waterford Crystal) and the course and clubhouse was busy as a result while we did our Lotto draw. Waterford Crystal have a long history of support for Dungarvan Golf Club and it is encouraging to see the number of players participating in one of our most prestigious events.
The numbers drawn for our Lotto were 3, 21, 23 and 26. There was no winner of the Jackpot which increases to €8,400 next week. There was one winner of the Match 3s this week – Mary Kelly who wins €100. Congratulations to Mary.
The €90 tickets for Lotto 3 are on sale and we are encouraging members to purchase a ticket. As you are aware the profit on the lotto is invested into developing and improving the course. Our members have been extremely generous to-date in their support of the Lotto and we have no doubt that this will continue.
Our last draw of Lotto 2 will take place next Thursday afternoon about 4:00pm – all are welcome.
Our weekly 60.com will restart on Wednesday 29th July at 2pm.
Our weekly Youngones golf will restart on Wednesday 29th July at 12 noon. We look forward to seeing you all then.
Our Pro Shop is a hive of activity and as always, David is available to offer professional fitting advice as well as “demonstration” clubs to help you to maximise your game.
