Dungarvan Golf Club said goodbye to one of its much respected and loved members, Mary Flahavan last week. In the words of her family, she was an amazing wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and colleague and someone that we are all fortunate to have known. Mary was the heartbeat of her family. She filled their home with love and laughter and no one will ever be able to fill her space at the head of the table. Mary’s loss will only truly be realised in the months and years ahead but the happy memories she has left, will remain forever.

Mary was Captain in 2013 and her commitment to Dungarvan Golf Club was 100%. Her organisational skills, forward planning and attention to detail was of the highest standard. This mirrored her approach to many tasks she undertook throughout her life. As a golfer she was a skilled irons player and represented the club in many ILGU Munster competitions. She will be greatly missed by all at Knocknagranagh and our sincere condolences go to her husband John and her children Annie, James, Johnny, Tom, Ellen and Philip and all her extended family and friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam.

Tom is originally from North County Dublin and has lived in Dungarvan for over 20 years, after he, Mary and the family returned home to Ireland from the USA. Whilst Tom had busy senior executive roles working with multinational companies in Ireland, Europe and the USA, he enjoyed his free time and family life in Dungarvan. He has served on the local RNLI fund raising committee in the past and is still an active member of the Dungarvan Lions Club. He also did other volunteer work as a Scout leader in Balbriggan, a member of Rotary in Dublin and in Limerick and the Simon Community in Dublin. Tom was previously a member of Balbriggan GC in North County Dublin and Castletroy GC in Limerick.

Shortly after moving here, Tom and Mary and the family, joined Dungarvan Golf Club and really appreciated the warm welcome they received as newcomers in the Deise.  He has served on committee at Dungarvan Golf Club as Hon. Secretary and as Marketing Chair in the past and was delighted to accept the nomination for President this year. This was a challenging year for Tom as he had to step in mid-year as acting Chairman, in addition to his Presidents role. However, he has taken it in his stride and he looks forward to a great weekend’s golf at the club.
