KATHLEEN PHELAN

It was with great sadness that we learnt the news of the sudden passing of our dear friend and member Kathleen Phelan. Kathleen loved her golf and was always a smiling face. She played a full part in the club through the years, on committees, teams, as a Lady Captain in 1969 and President in 1988. She was full of life and will always be remembered having fun and for her party piece, last performed on the tour in Portugal! Thank you to all the members who attended the Guard of Honour to show our respect for her and as her daughter Julianne remarked during the eulogy “she will have enjoyed the attention she received”. Our thoughts and prayers are with her daughters Margaret and Julianne and her son John and all of Kathleen’s family at this time. She will be sadly missed by us all here at Dungarvan Golf Club. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

We also extend our sincerest sympathies to Anna Harhan on the passing of her Mother Sheila Boland and also to Nora O’Flynn on the passing of her mother. May They Rest In Peace.

COVID LEAGUE

Things are really close now with the Covid League.  The results from July have shown a change near the top with Mary Powers team (who were joint 3rd last month) overtaking Maisie Breen’s team to claim 2nd place at present, with Cathie O’Mahony’s team still holding on to 1st place.  Only 19 points separate the top 3 teams, and with 5 cards to count for the last round, its vital that all reams submit the maximum of 6 cards per member.  Indeed, Mary’s team took top spot last month with 85 points from the cards submitted. There is a mere 1 point between 4th place (Niamh Reynolds) and 5th place (Bridget Aherne).

So, one final push to everyone in the league – let’s make it a nail-biting finish.  Well done to all concerned so far. And remember, to play off 95% of your playing handicap. See chart in the Ladies locker room.

GET INTO GOLF 2021
Having completed their golf lessons with David Hayes our new golfers took to the course last Tuesday evening accompanied by our lady members. The success of our Get into Golf programme so far is due to the help and support we get from our lady members and this year is no exception. The enthusiasm and excitement was palpable as our new golfers came back in after playing a few holes. By all accounts we have some promising golfers among them. The on-course activities continue until Tues Aug 24 incl. when we will have our gala night and presentation of certificate
