We hosted the Munster Seniors Amateur Open last Wednesday and Thursday and it was a wonderful few days of golf for all participants. Our course was in pristine condition and the sun shone down over the two days. We received some fantastic compliments from Golf Ireland officials and competitors which makes all the hard work worthwhile!

Christopher O’Connor was crowned the 2022 Munster Senior Men’s Open champion. The Corrstown golfer started the final round three shots being 2021 champion John O’Brien, but a final round of 71 saw O’Connor win on +1 by two shots. O’Connor’s final round started with a bogey on the first hole, but it would be the only blemish on his card, with birdies on 12 and 18 saw him finish under par for the day.

O’Brien started the final round with a one-shot lead, but seven bogeys in his final round saw him slide back to second place. An excellent eagle on the 18th saw him move from a tie for fifth to solo second.

There was a three-way tie for third with Alan Condren (Greystones), Peter McNeill (Woodbrook) and John Reynolds (Mount Juliet) finish on +4. O’Brien’s +3 also saw him win the 54-59 category. Cork’s Pat Lyons was the 60-64 winner on +9, with Portmarnock’s Adrian Morrow winning the Over-65 category, also on +9.

A fantastic week for our Junior Golfers as we were in action in both the Fred Daly Trophy and the Irish Junior Foursomes. First up, we faced Waterford Castle in the Fred Daly in what we thought would be a difficult encounter as it is a scratch tournament. Our team of Rody Morrissey, Mattie Mullaney, AJ Hayes, Harry Breen and Cal Tutty are made of stern stuff and despite the handicap difference, the boys stuck and played some wonderful golf to record a three-nil victory with two matches called in.  Indeed, the boys played so well that every match was in before the 14th hole.

Next up was our Irish Junior Foursomes match away to Faithlegg. After our great run last year, this was always going to be a difficult match. Rody paired up with Harry in this foursome’s format while AJ and Mattie resumed their partnership. Things looked great for our team after 12 holes as we went 5 up with some great golf. However, Faithlegg credibly fought back and were 1 up with two to play. But our boys are tough and never gave up with both pairs winning the 17th hole to put us 1 up. Indeed, Mattie holed a great four-footer on 17 for the win. Needing a half up 18 AJ produced the shot of the day playing a fabulous chip and run to 4 feet to set up a brilliant victory. We await our next opponents in both tournaments. Well done to our boys and special thanks to Paul, Barry and James for transporting our boys.

We had no competition on Wednesday 4th May.  Our Next competition is on Wednesday 11th May from 12.40 – 2.10pm please book in online.

The summer weather arrived for our on Wednesday 4th May. It was like the “lovely legs competition” – our members dusted down their shorts and put them to good use!

The course is in stunning condition at present. The scoring reflected this! Our timesheet was full – in fact we had to make room for extra competitors.

The winners were: 1st Pat Crowley 24pts, 2nd Sean O’Ciarba 20pts

If you wish to play in our society please book on the timesheet. New members are always welcome to join.

We had no competition last week as the time slots were given over to the Ard Scoil Classic which raised much needed funds to enhance sports facilities at the school. Well done to Fiona Rochford (PE teacher) who organised and coordinated the event. Congratulations to the winning team of Christine O’ Keeffe, Maria Ryan, June Hayes and Jean O’ Donovan.
