MEET OUR JUNIOR CAPTAINS

Our first Junior Get Into Golf Programme is now full! We are delighted with the response and look forward to meeting our new recruits in a few weeks.

Our Junior Captains are siblings Darragh and Sarah Moynihan and they are a wonderful asset to our club and we thought it would be nice to highlight how they ‘Got into Golf’.

Darragh got into golf approximately 8 years ago. Saturday lessons were advertised in Dungarvan Golf Club and Darragh started lessons with David on a weekly basis. Sarah started the weekly Saturday lessons when she turned 6 and really enjoyed them.

Both like playing because it can be social or competitive. You can enjoy a round of golf with your friends and family and have fun, but you can also compete in a lot of competitions locally and nationally.

Junior membership is very reasonable starting at €75 and second-hand clubs for juniors can be a reasonable price also. With golf you get a handicap to match your ability so everyone can play and compete. Unlike other sports only the best can make the team, golf is very different, everyone gets to play. It can be individual, or you can be playing as part of a team.

Darragh represented DGC in the Fred Daly and the Junior Foursomes which is a team effort. He has also competed on an individual level in Dungarvan and has won numerous competitions. Sarah has represented DGC in the Ladies Revive Active and the Ladies Intermediate Singles competitions. She too has competed on an individual level in Dungarvan and has won numerous competitions. She was part of the team that won the Munster skills challenge cup for the club.

What is really rewarding is once you get to a certain handicap level and pass the rules test, juniors can compete with adults at a very young age. We are very lucky in our club with PGA David Hayes who does weekly lessons on a Saturday and manages the junior tournaments in the club throughout the summer with great prizes to be won. Keep up the golf Darragh & Sarah, you are both fantastic role models for our Juniors!

Information Evening
There was a great crowd in attendance at this important evening. It was headed up by our Lady Captain June James assisted by the ladies in the Get into Golf Committee. The feedback later was very encouraging and the question and answer session gave our new golfers an opportunity to understand some of the basics of golf.

Get into Golf 2021
Congratulations to Nicola Tierney on winning the nine-hole qualifying competition last Tuesday with an impressive score of 20pts. Very consistent golf Nicola. As our Get into Golf ladies of 2021 continue to get their handicaps there are more of them entering this competition and allowing them the opportunity

to understand competitive golf.

Get into Golf 2022
We had twenty-eight of our new ladies take to the fairways last Tuesday evening for their first time. They are a very enthusiastic group who seem very keen and interested in the game. It is not unusual to meet them in the practice area or on the putting green trying to improve their skills. They all speak so highly of our PGA Professional David Hayes having completed four weeks of lessons with him. We intend running refresher lessons for them again in the Autumn.

Gala Evening (Get into Golf 2022)
The Gala evening for our Get into Golf ladies and men will be held on Wed evening Jun 29 at 8 pm in the clubhouse. This will bring to a close phase one of the Get into Golf programme and will outline clearly the programme going forward. Please mark the date in your diary and keep it free.
