The R&A and USGA have unveiled a regular update to the Rules of Golf as they continue to make the Rules easier to understand and apply. The new Rules will go into effect on 1 January 2023.

Several penalties have been relaxed and language has been clarified to help golfers at all levels of play.

Key changes include:

  • Modifications for Players with Disabilities: These modifications to the Rules for players with disabilities have been made part of the Rules and are in effect for all players who fall under the categories covered in Rule 25.
  • Handicap Usage in Stroke Play: With the continued growth of digital scoring following the adoption of the World Handicap System, players are no longer required to show their handicap on their scorecard in stroke play. The Committee will be responsible for calculating the player’s handicap strokes for the competition and using that to calculate the player’s net score.
  • Club Damaged During Round: The Rule has been amended to allow a player to replace a club that is damaged during a round, provided the player did not damage it through abuse.
  • Ball Moved by Natural Forces: A new Exception provides that a ball at rest must be replaced if it moves to another area of the course or comes to rest out of bounds after being dropped, placed or replaced.
  • Back-on-the-Line Relief Procedure: The back-on-the-line relief procedure, often used for penalty area and unplayable ball relief, has been simplified so that the player now drops their ball on the line, and the ball must come to rest within one club-length of where it is dropped.

Upon review, the Men’s club has decided to change the format for this year’s winter league. This year the winter league will be run on an individual league based on the following categories: +3 to 7; 8 to 16 & 17+.

As there may be different numbers playing in each category the number of overall prizes in each category will be reflective of the numbers playing in that category. It is intended to start the league from week commencing Thursday 1st December and it will run until the end of February – best 8 weekly scores to count towards the league standing.

There will be 3 qualifying 14-hole competitions per week – Thursday, Saturday & Sunday and players can enter as often as desired with best card for the week to count for league. Entry fee is set at €20 and MUST be paid in advance of league. You can enter after the league start date but no cards will be counted towards the league until entry received.

As previously advised the weekly competitions for the duration of the league will be based on categories with the winner of each category receiving a one-point penalty for the duration of winter league competitions (this deduction will not apply towards league standing)

Thank you to those who have already expressed an interest in playing the league you can now pay your entry in the pro shop or in the office. For those interested in playing please reply to this email so we can get overall numbers and please pay though pro shop or office.

A big thankyou to our club professional David Hayes for coming onboard again this year to sponsor the winter league.
