CLUB TEAMS

Many of our club teams are in action at the moment, thanks to all our players and managers who give so much of their time in representing our club. Our Mixed Fourball, Purcell, Bruen and Fred Daly teams have already enjoyed success in the early rounds but possibly the highlight so far is our Boys Junior Foursomes team who defeated the All-Ireland Champions Tramore on Saturday. Best of luck to all our teams and managers in the next few months. Maybe a pennant or two is waiting for us!

JIMMY BRUEN SHIELD

Our Jimmy Bruen team, managed by John Gough and his two deputies, Gerry Raher and Derek Power, made the short journey to Lismore on Sunday to do battle with a fancied home team. In an exciting and quality encounter, it all came down to the final match still on the course. Dungarvan held a 2-1 lead and needed a half to get over the line. Dermot Ahern and Donal Williams were one down on the 18th tee and saw their opponents get a solid par. Thankfully for us, Dermot and Donal produced an excellent birdie to claim the necessary half and set up a home tie against West Waterford in the next round. Congratulations to John and his panel and good luck going forward.

PIERCE PURCELL SECOND ROUND WIN

Congratulations to our Pierce Purcell team, panel, and team managers Donal Williams and Matt Curran, who beat Waterford Castle 2.5 to 1.5 in the second round of the Pierce Purcell competition at Waterford Castle GC last Saturday 24th May. Congratulations to all and good luck in round three at home to Mitchelstown.

JUNIOR NEWS

Unfortunately, the weather prevented last Saturday’s Junior lessons from going ahead but we will try again next Saturday at 3pm. If you like to be included in our Saturday WhatsApp group so that we can notify you of cancellations, please forward your details to our Junior Convenor David Hayes at 0862681701.

Our Junior Foursomes team were in action last Saturday evening facing the All-Ireland Champions Tramore. Our team of Mattie Mullaney, Rory McKeown, AJ Hayes and James O’Donnell coped admirably with the conditions against strong opposition. Mattie and Rory made a brilliant birdie on eighteen to secure a level match leaving our fate in match two. We were one up when AJ hit a massive drive down seventeen. James followed with a super eight iron to the heart of the green where AJ calming rolled in the birdie putt to secure a famous victory by 2 holes. Next up is Castlemartyr at home.

Best of luck to all our members sitting Junior and Leaving Certs soon. Remember that exams are like golf, the more you put into, the more you get out of it. Any enquiries relating to our Junior activities can be directed to Junior Convenor David Hayes. David can be contacted at 0862681701 or email to davidhayesgolf@gmail.com.
