CENTENARY 2024

We have lots of great competitions and events lined up to celebrate our Centenary year. Our committee have been very busy and we thank them for all the work they are putting in to ensure 2024 is a wonderful year of celebrations at our club. Keep an eye on our social media pages as we are sharing photos from days gone by. We will also share some history here of the club over the coming weeks starting with how it all began in 1924.

CLUB HISTORY

The club was set up in 1924 when a nine-hole links was laid out on the Cunnigar (a three-mile sand spit which is only a 9-iron distance south of Dungarvan town). Members usually visited the Cunnigar in the boat of John ‘The Lord’ Duggan, who infamously declared during a stormy crossing, “fear not, for The Lord is with you!” The widespread appeal of the game and the growing membership led to affiliation to the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1924. Alas, coastal erosion and Cunnigar inaccessibility led the club to seek an alternative venue.

In 1929 the club moved to Clonea, playing on farm land beside the Ocean View Hotel (now The Clonea Strand Hotel). A small pavilion was erected to house golf equipment, and the members used the hotel for refreshment and social functions. Golf had taken off in the Déise county; however, a mere seven years later the search for suitable lands began again. Sites in Garranbane, Killosera and Lisfennell were considered, but the members opted for a scenic part of the Stephenson estate in Ballinacourty beside the sea. JOIN US IN 2024

We have a great new member joining rate for 2024 – join us for €400 (+ €28 Golf Ireland fee) for the year. Dungarvan Golf Club has lots to offer everyone.

We have an excellent Pro Shop for all your equipment needs, our PGA Professional David Hayes who along with giving great golf advice gives lessons to beginners and seasoned golfers. We have a range of competitions and casual golf options for all types of golfers.

We have a beautiful bar and restaurant where Tom and his team serve delicious breakfasts, lunches and evening meals daily.  We have plenty of social events throughout the year and also weekly bridge, cards and poker nights along with book clubs, day trips and visits to other golf courses. TABLE QUIZ NIGHT

We are holding a Fun table quiz night at the club house on Wednesday 14th February at 8pm.  Our Quizmaster is the inimitable Bob O’Brien. There are lots of prizes to be won! €40 per table of four. Family and friends are all welcome. If you have no team turn up anyway and we’ll find you one!  

BANK HOLIDAY SCRAMBLE

Join us this Monday 5^th February for our popular bank holiday 14H Champagne Scramble. Bookings open online or call us 058-43310. Teams of three – any combination. We look forward to welcoming you.

Our Membership Renewal Invoices have gone out to all members by email. We encourage members to pay in full or set up a payment plan using our BRS Memberships system. Please contact the office if you require assistance with this or if you had difficulty receiving the email.

MENS SPRING LEAGUE

The Spring League commences on Thursday February 1st. The team sheets will be on display in the Men’s locker room. Please write your date of play and score opposite your name on completion of your round each time you play. Note you must enter the competition in play on the day – Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday – to make your score count. Entries of teams of six will be accepted up to and including February 1st

LADIES SPRING LEAGUE

This is a 9-hole singles competition where your best 2 cards will count each month from January until end of March. The more you play, the better chance of getting those 2 great scores. Further details on the noticeboard in the locker room.  Good luck to all the participants.

SUNDAY SOCIAL SCRAMBLE
The timesheet is open for our next social scramble which is scheduled for this coming Sunday afternoon (Feb 4). These scrambles are open to all members, are great social events and an ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon if you are free.
Shotgun start at 2 pm.

YOUNGONES

We were back in action on Wednesday 24^th in lovely weather. 1^st Mary Buckley (31) 16pts, 2^nd Bernie Hayes (25) 15pts. Our next competition is on 31^st at 11am.

60.COM

The weather eventually was favourable on Wednesday 24th January to allow us to play our 60.com – this was almost a miracle as all the other days of the week had rain. We played in excellent conditions weather wise, mind you the ground was quite soft. We had a full timesheet and excellent scores.

The winners were: 1^st Patrick Cumisky 21pts, 2^nd Craig Susdorf 20pts, 3^rd Bernard Gorman 19pts. We circulated to our members with the list of outings that we have in 2024 – six from April to September. If you are interested in social golf, and are over 60 years of age, join us any Wednesday by putting your name on our timesheet.

FUN FRIDAY FOURSOMES
Despite a low entry last Friday, we had very close scoring with a birdie recorded
by Pat Cumisky and Linda Bradfield on the 13th hole. However, they were up against stiff opposition who were playing very consistent golf. Thanks again for supporting this social event each Friday. Winners: John Dalton and Tom Power 34 ¾. We are back again this Friday. We would love to see you there.

LOTTO RESULTS

We had our weekly Lotto 5 draw on Friday, 26th January. This was Week 37 of 52.
The numbers drawn were 5, 13, 14 and 21. The jackpot was €5,800, and there was no winner. The jackpot is €5,900 for the next draw. We had one match 3 winner – Des Power – who wins €100.

Lotto tickets can be purchased on our website www.dungarvangolfclub.com or in the clubhouse. Thank you to everyone who supports our Lotto. All funds raised are used to develop our course. Our next draw is on Friday 2^nd February.

POKER CLASSIC

Thanks to everyone who attended our Poker Classic last Sunday night. Congratulations to winner Martin Landers, 2^nd David Hayes and 3^rd Pat Power. We look forward to our next poker classic at the end of February.
